Multi-agent based simulation of smart building cluster for electric grid stabilization
(IOP Publishing, 21.11.2019) Hall, Monika; Geissler, Achim; Wache, Holger [in: Journal of Physics: Conference Series]
With the increasing number of photovoltaic systems and heat pumps in buildings existing substations of the electric grid could be overloaded. A multi-agent based simulation of a building cluster studies the impact of building flexibility in regard to the residual substation load. Each building announces its available flexibility, e.g. "heat pump can be switched off/on". A master coordinator evaluates all incoming offers and decides which offers are accepted. This reduces the residual load at the substation. This paper presents results from a study of the impact at the substation of a smart urban building cluster with different penetration scenarios of heat pumps, photovoltaic systems, batteries and electric vehicles. It is shown that a high penetration of heat pumps and photovoltaic systems violates the substation's limits for the studied building cluster. Batteries cannot reduce the peak utilization. The master coordinator's load shifting options are limited.

Poster Abstract: SmartStability - A multi-agent simulation environment for flexibility trading in households
(Springer, 01.02.2018) Wache, Holger; Künzli, Michael; Schulz, Nicola; Bichsel, Jürg; Hall, Monika [in: Computer Science - Research and Development]
The increasing number of volatile energy sources, such as solar power plants, challenges the power network operators, the energy brokers as well as the electricity market actors. In this work, a multi-agent based approach will be introduced that allows multiple households to trade flexibilities, on top of the usual selling of produced energy to the paying consumer. Flexibility trading allows different optimisations for different actors. They can slightly shift their electricity consumption, e.g. by turning boilers on/off, to optimise the system (e.g. follow a predefined schedule). Simulation results indicate that a flexibility market consisting of only few households can already help to optimise the system.

PVopti - hourly based energy balance for building design
(Elsevier, 2017) Hall, Monika; Burger, Bastian [in: Energy Procedia]
PVopti is a freeware tool to calculate hourly energy balance for different building types. It is simple to use and it quickly calculates self-consumption for different designs. Load profiles according to SIA 2024 are used to distribute yearly values on hours. For demand of lighting a criterion for daylight is added. Compared with measurements of single family houses and apartment buildings, self-consumption calculated with PVopti shows very good agreement. Currently, a German version is available on www.minergie.ch, soon there will be versions for 4 languages (dt, fr, it, en).

Different balancing methods for Net Zero Energy Buildings - Impact of time steps, grid interaction and weighting factors
(Elsevier, 2017) Hall, Monika; Geissler, Achim [in: Energy Procedia]
Adding large photovoltaic systems to buildings is becoming more and more popular. To date, the self-consumption/grid interaction is not typically part of the energy balance. The choice of symmetric or asymmetric primary energy factors has an impact on the balance. The primary energy factor for import from the grid depends on the chosen type of the power mix in the grid. If this factor is higher/lower than the primary energy factor of the on-site PV-system, a larger/smaller PV system than when using symmetrical factors is required in order to fulfil the NZEB balance.

Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von grossen Nullenergiegebäuden
(Wiley, 02/2016) Hall, Monika; Geissler, Achim [in: Bauphysik]

(Wiley, 06/2014) Hall, Monika; Dorusch, Falk; Geissler, Achim [in: Bauphysik]

Two Years of Experience with a Net Zero Energy Balance - Analysis of the Swiss MINERGIE-A Standard
(Elsevier, 09/2013) Burger, Bastian; Hall, Monika; Geissler, Achim [in: Energy Procedia]
With the net zero energy balance for heating, domestic hot water, ventilation and auxiliary energy, the Swiss MINERGIE-A Standard is a major step towards standardized, economically feasible net zero energy buildings. Not only the zero energy balance but also the requirement for limited embodied energy is a new challenge for architects and designers. In the two years since the launching of the Standard and the writing of this paper, approx. 240 buildings have been certified or pre certified. The new standard is widely accepted and its challenges are appreciated in the building sector. A cross analysis shows that a wide range of different energy concepts and embodied energy strategies are possible in the scope of the Standard. The wide variety of options is one of the main findings of the rollout of this new zero-balanced standard.

One Year Minergie-A—Switzerlands Big Step towards Net ZEB
(David Publishing Company, 01/2013) Hall, Monika [in: Journal of Civil Engineering and Architecture]
The first available label standardizing a zero-balanced type of building is the Swiss Standard Minergie-A. The Standard prescribes an annual net zero primary energy balance for heating, domestic hot water and ventilation. Electricity consumption for appliances and lighting is excluded. Additionally, Minergie-A is the first standard worldwide which includes a requirement in regard to embodied energy. Based on an analysis of 39 Minergie-A buildings, this paper shows that a wide range of different energy concepts and embodied energy strategies are possible in the scope of the label. The basis of all Minergie-A buildings is a well-insulated building envelope. However, the step from the Swiss Standard Minergie-A to a Net ZEB (net zero energy building) standard which includes electricity consumption for appliances and lighting is not a very big one. Increasing the size of the photovoltaic system is sufficient in most cases. Anyway, some of the Minergie-A buildings evaluated are also Net ZEBs. In this paper, it is also shown that the net zero balance during the operational phase of Net ZEBs clearly outweighs the increased embodied energy for additional materials in a life cycle energy analysis.

LCE analysis of buildings - Taking the step towards Net Zero Energy Buildings
(Elsevier, 2013) Hall, Monika; Berggren, Björn; Wall, Maria [in: Energy and Buildings]
The basic concept of a Net Zero Energy Building (Net ZEB) is that on-site renewable energy generation covers the annual energy load. The main objective of this study is to analyse the increase of embodied energy compared to the decrease of the energy use related to building operation; partly by a literature review, partly by detailed analysis of eleven case studies; taking the step from a low energy building to a Net ZEB. The literature review shows that the metric of evaluation, assumed life-span, boundary conditions, age of database and the origin of database differ in different studies and influence the result of embodied energy. The relationship between embodied energy and life cycle energy use is almost linear for all cases studied herein. During the last two decades, embodied energy in new buildings has decreased slightly. However, the relative share of embodied energy related to life cycle energy use has increased. The detailed life cycle energy analysis show that taking the step from a low energy building to a Net ZEB results in a small increase of the embodied energy. However, the energy savings achieved in the annual operating energy balance clearly exceed the increase in embodied energy.
