The 2017 SARN Conference explored the working conditions prevailing within artistic research. In the last 20 years, an institutionalization and academization of artistic work known as “artistic research” has taken place. Arts universities are establishing research institutes, promoting PhD programs, and competing against universities for funding. Most artists only have small workloads in institution-based research. As much time is spent on projects and exhibitions as on teaching and earning a living. Although much of this work receives great symbolic recognition, it remains unremunerated. Working in such diverse contexts demands great flexibility regarding methods, skills, and the ability to reconcile several roles. The two-day SARN Conference reflected on the processes involved in institutionalizing the changing material and ideological preconditions of artistic research in recent years from the perspective of artistic researchers. The conference aimed to better understand the current situation of artistic researchers, to outline concrete ideas for future work-life strategies and for other funding and job opportunities, and to formulate concrete demands for self-determined artistic research. The Conference took place at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). In line with the conference topic, we reflected on working conditions at ZHdK’s new building.06 - Präsentation
- PublikationAnalog und Digital im Dialog - 3D-Druck lernen und lehren(22.09.2017) Schwander, Markus; Mauroux, StefanieIm Rahmen der Strategischen Initiative EduNaT untersuchte ein interdisziplinäres Team Formen der Vermittlung von 3D-Software für den 3D-Druck. Daraus entsteht bis Ende 2017 die Publikation „3D-Druck lernen und lehren“ herausgegeben von Stefanie Mauroux, Falk Scheidig und Markus Schwander. Schwerpunkte des Lehrmittels sind eine möglichst vielfältige Verwendung von Softwares, die Nähe zu analogen Arbeitsweisen und Verbindungen zur Schulrealität (andere Fächer, Klassensituation). - PublikationGrenzgang - When promenadology meets library(30.03.2017) Lurk, Tabea; Schwander, MarkusAt the core of the presentation is the documentation of the research project GRENZGANG in the integrated catalogue of the media library of the Academy of Art and Design (FHNW HGK). For two years GRENZGANG has been occupied, in the mode of artistic research (Frayling 1993, Tröndle 2012, Mersch 2015, Fernandes, Miranda 2015 ), with aspects of urban history, drawing on architectural heritage and cultural history. Both the application of partly digital (documentary) media and the formats of the resulting artworks and documentations illustrate how complex space and spatial experience in an increasingly digitally over-laid world can look. The artistic interpretations and interventions of GRENZGANG make those dimensions of specific places and spatial experiences sensorily accessible which are, for the most part, more difficultly perceived. The integrated catalogue of the media library attempts to display such artistic works in their heterogeneity and variety alongside other rather classic library resources. - PublikationIBA Grenzgang Talk: Künstlerische Untersuchungen im Trinationalen Raum(20.10.2016) Schwander, Markus; Florenz, BeateDas Forschungsprojekt „Grenzgang - Künstlerische Untersuchungen zur Wahrnehmung von Raum im trinationalen Grenzgebiet“ stand von Anfang an in Kooperation mit der IBA 2020. An der Zwischenpräsentation der IBA im September 2016 beteiligte sich „Grenzgang“ mit zwei Spaziergängen und einem Vortrag. Im „Grenzgang - Talk“ in der Voltahalle wurde die Raumwahrnehmung thematisiert, indem künstlerische Notationen der Teammitglieder einzeln und im Gesamtzusammenhang der Forschungsplattform im Salon Mondial vorgestellt wurden. Integriert in den Vortrag war ein kurzer Spaziergang am Rhein, der unterschiedliche Klangräume verband.06 - Präsentation
- PublikationForschende Kunst als Beruf(22.06.2016) Schwander, Markus; Koehle, Petra; Dombois, Florian; Keller, Roman; Mader, RachelGespräch mit Petra Koehle (Künstlerin, École cantonale d‘art du Valais ECAV, Sierre), Florian Dombois (Künstler, ZHdK), Roman Keller (Künstler), moderiert von Rachel Mader (Kunstwissenschaftlerin, Hochschule Luzern) und Markus Schwander (Künstler, Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst FHNW Basel). Das Berufsfeld der forschenden Kunst ist jung, die gesellschaftliche Anerkennung fragile und die strukturellen Bedingungen weiterhin im Aufbau. Kunstschaffende, die ihre Aktivitäten als Forschung verstehen, müssen die entsprechende Biografie selbst entwickeln. Kooperationen mit anerkannten Akteuren der Forschung sind in gleicher Weise notwendig wie eine konstante Herausforderung, dies auch weil forschende Kunst keine geeinte Perspektive oder Methodologie beschreibt. Im Gespräch mit drei forschenden Kunstschaffenden werden exemplarisch Arbeitsformen, das jeweils unterschiedliche Selbstverständnis und die ebenso diversen Rahmenbedingungen vorgestellt und kritisch diskutiert. Über welche Spezifik verfügt die Berufspraxis 'forschende Kunst'? Wie sollte diesen Eigenheiten im Bezug auf Förderung und Anstellungsmöglichkeiten Rechnung getragen werden? For many years, SARN has been conducting the debate about artistic research. In this Workshop, it will deepen the debate with new content, by examining the exhibitions Dada Anders and Ulla Von Brandenberg (Museum haus konstruktiv Zurich) as well as by hosting a talk between the artist Sadie Murdoch and the Goldsmiths alumni and artist Sabine Hagemann about Murdoch's work as lecturer and researcher at Goldsmiths College London.06 - Präsentation
