    Graph-based keyword spotting in historical documents using context-aware Hausdorff edit distance

    Scanned handwritten historical documents are often not well accessible due to the limited feasibility of automatic full transcriptions. Thus, Keyword Spotting (KWS) has been proposed as an alternative to retrieve arbitrary query words from this kind of documents. In the present paper, word images are represented by means of graphs. That is, a graph is used to represent the inherent topological characteristics of handwriting. The actual keyword spotting is then based on matching a query graph with all document graphs. In particular, we make use of a fast graph matching algorithm that considers the contextual substructure of nodes. The motivation for this inclusion of node context is to increase the overall KWS accuracy. In an experimental evaluation on four historical documents, we show that the proposed procedure clearly outperforms diverse other template-based reference systems. Moreover, our novel framework keeps up or even outperforms many state-of-the-art learning-based KWS approaches.

    The morality menu project

    The discipline of machine ethics examines, designs and produces moral machines. The artificial morality is usually pre-programmed by a manufacturer or developer. However, another approach is the more flexible morality menu (MOME). With this, owners or users replicate their own moral preferences onto a machine. A team at the FHNW implemented a MOME for MOBO (a chatbot) in 2019/2020. In this article, the author introduces the idea of the MOME, presents the MOBO-MOME project and discusses advantages and disadvantages of such an approach. It turns out that a morality menu could be a valuable extension for certain moral machines.

    Optimization of multi-robot sumo fight simulation by a genetic algorithm to identify dominant robot capabilities

    This paper analyzes the multirobot sumo fight simulation. This simulation is based on a computational model of several sumo fighters, which physically interact while trying to move the opponent out of the arena (lost fight). The problem is optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA), where the capabilities of not only one particular robot but of all robots simultaneously are improved. In this particular problem setup, the problem definition changes depending on the optimization path, because all robots also get better, competing against each other. The influence of different operators of the GA is investigated and compared. This paper raises the questions, which genetically controlled capabilities (e.g. size, speed) are dominant over time and how they can be identified by a sensitivity analysis using a GA. The results shed light on which parameters are dominant. This experiment typically opens up interesting fields of further research, especially about how to address optimization problems, where the optimization process influences the search space and how to eliminate the factor of randomness.

    Introducing case study audio podcasts in business and information systems studies

    The paper presents a project of the School of Business of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland in which the project team is developing case study podcasts together with Swiss-based technology startups to apply them in case-based teaching in Business and Information Systems study programs. The goal of the project is to facilitate students' access to case study contexts by allowing them to listen to podcasts for self-study and develop solutions for practice-oriented business and technology challenges in the classroom and guided group work. This provides an engaging blended learning approach for the students through increased motivation to consume the learning material as well as a deeper connection to the study material, compared to the more commonly applied text-based case studies. This can enable much more productive classroom discussions and group work and could therefore provide improved learning outcomes, such as increased reflection, critical thinking, as well as analytical and problem-solving skills. The paper enriches the blended learning debate with details about the case study podcast production from a content-related, technological and didactical perspective as well as provides insights into the planned evaluation of the application of case study podcasts with regard to learning outcomes.
