    20 Jahre EWR-Nein und der “Sonderfall” Schweiz

    Zwanzig Jahre nach dem Nein in der Abstimmung über den Beitritt zum europäischen Wirtschaftsraum (EWR) wurde Ende Jahr wieder intensiv über das Verhältnis der Schweiz zu Europa diskutiert. Wie damals sind die Positionen auch heute klar bezogen: Gewisse feiern sich selber, beschwören die Schweiz und stilisieren ein Volk im Gegensatz zur classe politique; andere hingegen sprechen von Mythen, heben hervor, wie die EU ohne EWR über den Bilateralismus in der Schweiz gelangt ist und relativieren dementsprechend. In diesem Beitrag geht es nicht darum, einem dieser beiden Pole beizustimmen. Der Essay erörtert vielmehr, wie diese vergangene Abstimmung ihre gesellschaftliche Wirkung entfaltet hat, ohne zwingend politisch relevant zu sein, um so mehr über den eigentlichen Sonderfall Schweiz jenseits parteipolitischer Vorstellungen zu erfahren.

    Der Blogbeitrag fasst den neunten Workshop «Sociology of Conventions an der Helmut Schmidt- Universität in Hamburg zusammen und gibt einen kurzen Überblick über die verschiedenen Beiträge der Workshopteilnehmenden. Im Rahmen des Workshopthemas «Pluralities of Conventions» befassten sich die verschiedenen Beiträge mit der «doppelten Komplexität» von (Qualitäts-)konventionen resp. Wertigkeits- und Rechtfertigungsordnungen, den verschiedenen Regimen des Engagements, dem Status von Konventionen mit und ohne semantischen Inhalt (insbesondere im Zeitalter der Digitalisierung), und der möglichen Emergenz einer neuen bio(s)-Konvention. Keynote Speaker war mit Laurent Thévenot einer der Begründer der Wissenschaftsbewegung der ‘Économie des Conventions’ bzw. der Konventionensoziologie.

    A Critical, Design Driven Approach to New Interfaces for Music Education

    Over the last years, smartphones and tablets have become attractive and ubiquitous platforms for sound and music applications, popularizing new ways of creating and manipulating digital sound. According to Krebs, founder and director of the DigiEnsemble Berlin, music apps offer people with little or no musical education access to new means of musical activity and sonic expression (Krebs 2014). This development has an impact on how music making is conceptualized and practiced and thus is relevant for music education. As practitioners increasingly incorporate multitouch tablets in their educational practice (see, e.g., Riley 2013, Krebs 2014), a critical and practice based pedagogical discourse regarding the use of these technologies is necessary, in order to allow the “reflective practitioner” to develop a systematic understanding of the diverse application and interface concepts, which can be seen as embodiments of musical concepts and ideologies. Furthermore, it can inform the design of applications for a pedagogy of listening and music/sound making, that truly leverage the potential of new technologies and meet the quality standards of music education.

    Access to baccalaureate school in Switzerland. Regional variance of institutional conditions and its consequences for educational inequalities

    In Switzerland, baccalaureate school is still considered to be the royal road to a university education and the elite path for the social reproduction of the upper class. However, cantonal enrollment to baccalaureate school varies widely due to Swiss federalism. There is a recurring debate on whether access to baccalaureate school is fair and equal among pupils who live in different cantons and who are of different social origin. This paper aims to analyze how the institutional conditions of cantons and municipalities impact a pupil’s probability of entering baccalaureate school and how the cantonal provisioning of places in baccalaureate school affects social inequality of access. For our theoretical foundation, we combine concepts of neo-institutionalism with mechanisms of social reproduction in education. Empirically, we analyze national longitudinal register data to model educational transitions from compulsory to baccalaureate school by using logistic regression models. Our results show that institutional structures at the cantonal and municipal levels influence the probability of transition beyond individual pupils’ characteristics. The degree of inequality varies between cantons, depending on the supply of baccalaureate school places. Inequality first increases with an increasing number of places (the scissors effect) and decreases only after the demand of more privileged families for places at baccalaureate school is saturated.

    Assessing creative potential as student outcome: On the applicability of the TCT-DP

    Within a constantly changing society, the ability to act creatively in various domains is becoming increasingly important. Schools are expected to react to this by educating their students in complex problem-solving skills and creative thinking (OECD, 2014). Teachers are therefore asked to foster creativity, which implies a need to learn more about assessing creativity or creative potential. When evaluating programs that are designed to foster creativity in and out of school, it is necessary to assess creativity as a criterion, even though this is a challenging thing to do. The difficulties become particularly apparent when it comes to investigating creativity development. The present study uses the Test for Creative Thinking-Drawing Production (Urban & Jellen, 1996) to take a closer look at the measurability of creativity during childhood. German students were tested three times while at elementary school (at the beginning of the first grade and at the end of the second and fourth grade). We tested measurement equivalence and found partially strong measurement invariance in a subset of the rating categories suggested in the test’s manual. The proposed model is discussed theoretically and empirically, while keeping in mind that it is essentially a preliminary finding until replication studies have been conducted. The study indicates how creativity could be taken into account as a relevant student outcome in large-scale assessments.
