Roving gangs of indignant mobile-phone music-listeners disrupt the public transit experience. iPhones chirp out the sound of something called ‘crickets’, creatures many a listener may very well never encounter. Airlines pass on the extravagant levy of ‘noise charges’ to their customers, a kind of psychic and acoustic bandwidth fee. Microwave ovens, automobiles and authoritative ahuman voices chime out an acoustic ecology that is neither ‘natural’ nor ‘cultural’, neither ‘societal’ nor ‘technological’, but something that is a heterogeneous mixture of all of these sources, causes and categories. These are 'acoustic infrastructures', and although human-made, they are naturalised by their ubiquity and always-on-ness, along with our allover, everyday, experience of them.01A - Beitrag in wissenschaftlicher ZeitschriftPublikation Actefact: einmaliges Magazin des Instituts HyperWerk(Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst FHNW, Institut HyperWerk, 2007) Aus der Au, ChristinaErscheinungsbild eines Zeitschriftenheftes. - Diesjährige Diplompublikation. - Auch als Beilage zur Zeitschriftennummer Nr. 115 (2007) von DE:BUG05 - Forschungs- oder ArbeitsberichtPublikation Adieu Bockstecherhof: 1998-2014(Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst FHNW, Institut HyperWerk, 2014)02 - MonographiePublikation Aeolian Technology(2022) Allen, JamieA talk for the "In the Wind" sessions of Anant National University Design programme, relating environmental art, design to principles and ideas of elemental media, ecological and material philosophy, and the history of infrastructure. Using the aeolian harp as a metaphor and actual designed instrument for the tracing of both human and natural actualities and histories, this session asked students to interrogate and reconfigure relationships between ecology and technology, technique and elemental flows.06 - PräsentationPublikation Affect and Atmosphere in Controlled Responsive Environments(Springer, 07/2016) Simon, Andreas; Torpus, Jan-Lewe; Heibach, Christiane; Navarro, José Javier; Streitz, Norbert; Markopoulos, PanosWe explore the atmospheric potential and the affective connection between humans and their instrumented, responsive environments and develop corresponding artistic design strategies, evaluating ubicomp environments from a critical perspective, beyond pure application and usefulness. We have designed an abstract, cocoon-like, responsively mediated space and conducted a series of experiments with a total of 17 participants. Results show that participants experience affection, a coupling between themselves and the designed environment, and show strong cognitive engagement to understand and structure the environment through patterns of situation awareness and sensemaking.04B - Beitrag KonferenzschriftPublikation Affective-responsive Environments(Zayed University Books, 2014) Torpus, Jan-LeweThis paper describes the concepts, media settings, strategies and methods of a media art work and an artistic research project. Both apply psychophysiological biofeedback technologies as affective interfaces between humans and artificial artistically-staged environments. The paper includes a comparison of media art creation with artistic research processes and intends to identify possible synergies.04B - Beitrag KonferenzschriftPublikation Algorhythmic Horizon(04.06.2017) Miyazaki, Shintaro01B - Beitrag in Magazin oder ZeitungPublikation Algorhythmics. A diffractive approach for understanding computation(Routledge, 2018) Miyazaki, Shintaro; Sayers, Jentery04A - Beitrag SammelbandPublikation The Algorithms of Mindfulness(SAGE, 22.06.2021) Bruder, JohannesThis paper analyzes notions and models of optimized cognition emerging at the intersections of psychology, neuroscience, and computing. What I somewhat polemically call the algorithms of mindfulness describes an ideal that determines algorithmic techniques of the self, geared at emotional resilience and creative cognition. A reframing of rest, exemplified in corporate mindfulness programs and the design of experimental artificial neural networks sits at the heart of this process. Mindfulness trainings provide cues as to this reframing, for they detail each in their own way how intermittent periods of rest are to be recruited to augment our cognitive capacities and combat the effects of stress and information overload. They typically rely on and co-opt neuroscience knowledge about what the brains of North Americans and Europeans do when we rest. Current designs for artificial neural networks draw on the same neuroscience research and incorporate coarse principles of cognition in brains to make machine learning systems more resilient and creative. These algorithmic techniques are primarily conceived to prevent psychopathologies where stress is considered the driving force of success. Against this backdrop, I ask how machine learning systems could be employed to unsettle the concept of pathological cognition itself.01A - Beitrag in wissenschaftlicher ZeitschriftPublikation All we need is (Art) Research?(Swiss Artistic Research Network (SARN), 2015) Caviezel, Flavia; Gisler, Priska03 - SammelbandPublikation Allowance & Choice.
