fhnw.leadDemographic changes, technological advancements and globalization impact the Automation Engineering labor market. Are engineering companies aware of this issue? What is the current state and what are valid solutions? Literature Review combined with an online survey give answers to these questions.
fhnw.initialPositionThe task to find the right skilled talent in time seems to be a challenge for companies in Western Europe. Demographic changes will complicate the task even more in the future. What are the main obstacles? How large is the current labor force gap and what is the expected gap in 5 year time? What solutions are available to overcome the labor force gap? Are there regional differences? These questions are to be answered by summarizing the current research findings and by collecting views and opinions concerning these challenges from practitioners.
fhnw.procedureThe project was executed in two stages. Firstly, an extensive literature review on the current state and future trend of the labor work force as well as the effects of demographic changes was conducted. Moreover, an online survey was launched. Basis for the survey was a sample of practitioner addresses which was provided by the client. In the second stage the findings of the literature review and the survey results were combined, summarized and concluded.
fhnw.resultsThe desk top research revealed the severity of demographic changes. Higher life expectancy, ascending median age of the labor workforce, and birth rates below the replacement level are to impact the labor market. The European Commission works on increased mobility of engineers across borders, however companies struggle with the lack of skilled talent. Although the survey could not be conducted as a statistically representative research, the main goal to obtain information on trends was achieved due to the diversity of responses. Every 2nd respondent claimed to have currently at least one open position. One finding was that larger firms tend not to fill open positions, whereas in smaller companies this is less an option. The true causes, why 88% of the respondents of the DACH region leave open positions unfilled, remain unclear due to the existing alternatives. The client, who is establishing a cross border expert community, is ensured that it can add value to overcome at least some gap.
