fhnw.leadWith rapidly changing technology and the downturn in using print media, the client is facing severe decline in subscribers.
fhnw.initialPositionThe analysed magazine is one of the leading outdoor magazines in Switzerland. Although it has a good position, the magazine faces the question of profitablity for the next five years. The aging of the readers and the change in technology may lead to financial penalties, loss of market position and possible the vanishment of the magazine.
fhnw.procedureThe project was divided into three parts. In the first part, interviews with institutions were conducted to gain an overview of the outdoor trends. Later the current outdoor sport activities were analysed with the help of several studies such as WEMF, Wandern in der Schweiz 2008 and Sport Schweiz 2014. Furthermore, a competition analysis was conducted in order to position the magazine. Finally, a SWOT analysis and strategic approaches were conducted and possible implementations were suggested.
fhnw.resultsThe project results in two possible outcome strategies. One outcome suggested an increased interest in nature and health. By including these attributes the client could broaden the readership and therefore increase their profitability and stabilize its market position. A second outcome shows that there is high interest in regional topics such as news, events, and the presentation of specific areas. Furthermore, topics about Swiss culture and Swiss tradition are highly desired. Benefits: Firstly, the client would be able to acquire more readers by using already the optimal medium. Secondly, it would be able to address an additional group; the one s interested in using the magazine to read about nature and health topics. For these purposes, the client already has the resources and know-how.
