fhnw.leadHow to increase competitive advantage through intelligent logistic solutions and efficient process management inside the company? A project team of four students from the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland aims to answer these questions for the company DIAMETAL.
fhnw.initialPositionDIAMETAL is a Swiss company supplying grinding and cutting tools and other products made from hard materials. Individual orders are in terms of volume and value often small, but large in numbers and diverse in destinations. Operations across countries are also part of the supply chain; semi-finished goods are occasionally relocated during the production process. Due to this complexity DIAMETAL is facing major logistical challenges. This project was launched in response to a concern of DIAMETAL regarding the costs and work flow efficiency of their logistical processes.
fhnw.procedureIn the first phase of the project, the task was to gain an understanding of the company s structure, the markets, internal and external flow of goods. In a second phase, the analysis of DIAMETAL s current situation with regard to logistics was conducted. The focus of the project was on the external logistic tasks such as shipping and transportation. In the next phase the internal logistics processes were visualized, described and their efficiency was assessed. Furthermore it will be evaluated to what extent the different processes could be ameliorated and what measures might be adopted.
fhnw.resultsThe analysis of the current state unexpectedly revealed that the overall costs for transportation and packaging were at the appropriate rate compared to the yearly turnover. The process analysis documented in detail the process chain and unfolded obstacles and inconsistencies. Potential for improvement and closer examination were found in the transportation between Switzerland and France as well as the inventory composition. A first request to carriers showed that the outsourcing of the shipment to a third party is only worthwhile financially if longer delivery times are accepted. Particularly regarding the reduction of warehousing space the current inventory level is still to be analysed and improved. The warehouse value represented 25% of the annual sales in 2011 and consequently the inventory turnover is at a low rate of 1 to 2.
