Importance and Use of Information Technology in Small and Medium-Sized Companies
(2007) Schubert, Petra; Leimstoll, Uwe [in: Electronic Markets Journal]
The following paper presents results from a longitudinal study about the importance and use of information and communication technology (ICT) in Swiss small and medium-sized companies (SMEs). In an empirical survey, 989 questionnaires were collected and analysed (return rate 17 %). The results were weighted according to company size and industry sector and are representative for Switzerland. The findings show that Swiss SMEs ? in their self assessment ? manage to gain (competitive) advantages from the deployment of information and communication technology. ICT is universally used (even) in (small and medium-sized) companies. There is a high degree of inter-organisational ICT use. ICT know-how and awareness are strongly rooted in management. The general conclusion is that IT matters for Swiss SMEs.

The Personalization Map, An Application-Oriented Overview of Personalization Functions
(GITO, 22.06.2006) Risch, Daniel; Schubert, Petra; Leimstoll, Uwe [in: Customer Interaction and Customer Integration]
Personalization is an interdisciplinary topic that has been discussed in the literature of marketing and information systems as well as in other research areas. In this paper we present findings from a longitudinal research project on personalization of e-commerce systems. The findings were taken from interviews and software development projects with company partners. Our discussion focuses on the Personalization Map. The map provides an extensive overview on personalization functions that can be used to individualize and improve human-computer-interaction both in B2C and B2B e-commerce environments. In a first step, the functions are classified according to their order of appearance in the buying process. In a second step they are grouped into subcategories. There is no single strategy for selecting successful personalization functions as the suitability varies depending on the industry and the goods sold.

Collaborative Recommender Systems for Online Shops
(2007) Leimstoll, Uwe; Stormer, Henrik [in: Proceedings of the 13th Americas Conference on Information Systems]
Recommender systems are often used in electronic shops in order to suggest similar or related products, potentially interesting products for a given customer or a set of products for a marketing campaign. Most recommender systems use the collaborative filtering method in order to provide the personalization information. The collaborative filtering method is a very efficient and convenient way of achieving personalization as there is no need to introduce semantic information about the products or to manually link products and users together. In the last years, a number of optimizations for collaborative filtering techniques have been developed. This paper collects the ideas and shows which of them could be integrated successfully in order to optimize a collaborative recommender system for online shops.

An Evaluation of Australian and Swiss E-Shops in the Grocery Sector
(2005) Kurnia, Sherah; Schubert, Petra; Leimstoll, Uwe [in: Proceedings of the 38th HICSS Conference]
The Extended Web Assessment Method (EWAM) is an evaluation tool specifically created for the assessment of electronic commerce applications. The method is based on an evaluation grid that includes a set of criteria with which to appraise the quality and success of e-commerce applications. The focus is on consumer perspectives and the specific features of the Internet as a medium. In this paper, we used the EWAM tool for a comparative analysis of Australian and Swiss e-shops selling grocery products. Using a comparative study between two different countries, we explored patterns for success or failure of such online applications. In general, the findings show that web sites in both countries do not fully meet the expectations of consumers. General expectations of consumers in online grocery shopping were explored and highlighted in this study.

A Classification for Business Model Types in E-commerce
(04.08.2011) Abdollahi, Golrou; Leimstoll, Uwe [in: Proceedings of the Seventeenth Americas Conference on Information Systems]
Internet business models have been widely discussed in literature and applied within the last decade. Nevertheless, a clear understanding of some e-commerce concepts does not exist yet. The classification of business models in e-commerce is one of these areas. The current research tries to fill this gap through a conceptual and qualitative study. Nine main e-commerce business model types are selected from literature and analyzed to define the criteria and their sub-criteria (characteristics). As a result three different classifications for business models are determined. This study can be used to improve the understanding of essential functions, relations and mechanisms of existing e-commerce business models.

Improving Consulting Processes in Web Analytics: A Framework for Multichannel Analytics
    (01.08.2015) Studer, Yves; Leimstoll, Uwe
To control and optimise their marketing activities, organisations analyse customer behaviour on their online and offline channels. This is referred to as multichannel analytics (MCA). As enterprises often do not have the necessary know-how to implement analytics processes, analytics consultants support them in such projects. The problem for the consultants is that a standardised approach, which provides orientation and guidance during such projects, is currently not available. The goal of this paper is to develop a framework, which guides consultants in order to avoid common project-related problems. It is developed employing Design Science Research Methodology. Empirical data collection and iterative validation of the framework are based on literature research, document analysis, expert interviews and a focus group. Results highlight that it is useful to combine a capability maturity model and an analytics procedure model. This allows taking into account the different degrees of organisational maturity during the consulting process.

    Personalization Beyond Recommender Systems
(Springer, 2006) Schubert, Petra; Leimstoll, Uwe; Risch, Daniel [in: IFIP International Federation for Information Processing]
Personalization is an interdisciplinary topic that has been discussed in the literature of marketing and information systems as well as in other research areas. In this paper we present findings from a longitudinal research project on personalization of e-commerce systems. The findings were taken from interviews and software development projects with company partners (action research). The main contribution described in this paper is the Personalization Map.
