    Der Beitrag stellt die wichtigsten Erschliessungsworkflows und Werkzeuge des digitalen Archivs der HGK FHNW Basel vor. Da die Daten medientechnisch, strukturell und mit Blick auf die Quel-len und Qualitäten (Erschliessungstiefe) sehr heterogen sind, passen sich die Vereinnahmungs- und Erschliessungsprozesse eher an die jeweiligen Sammlungen und Kontexte an, als umge-kehrt. Der Verzicht auf harte Archivvorgaben oder einen singulären Filter erfordert eine breite Pa-lette an unterschiedlichen Werkzeugen, denn trotz der Erhaltung von sprachlichen, fachlichen oder kulturell-ästhetischen Konventionen und Vorlieben, sollen Suche und Zugriff später systema-tisch und verständlich erfolgen können. Der Text beginnt mit einem Sammlungsüberblick, der die wechselseitigen Anforderungen von Datenlieferant*innen und Archiv transparent macht. Aus diesem Verhältnis lässt sich das Pro-zessdesign und die Abfolge der Erschliessungsroutinen ableiten. Die in den Workflows verwende-ten digitalen Werkzeuge werden benannt. Zuletzt wird reflektiert, welche Aspekte auf vergleichba-re Archive übertragbar sein könnten.

    Von der Archivvorstufe zum Archiv: (Forschungs-)Datenmanagement im Kontext von Gestaltung und Kunst

    Gegenstand des Beitrags ist der sog. "Indexer", ein digitales Werkzeug der Archivvorstufe, das zur Erschliessung / Übernahme digitaler Ressourcen in das digitale Archiv oder digitale Samm-lungen eingesetzt werden kann. Er erstellt von den eingespeisten Daten einen Index und analysiert die Daten in einer Erken-nungskaskade (vgl. Abb. 1), sodass ein z.B. Dubletten oder Systemfiles (NSRL - National Soft-ware Reference Library) ausgesondert werden können. Ferner wird ein Volltext-Index (SOLR) erstellt, in dem alle Textinformationen sowie die Metadaten durchsuchbar sind; es werden Vor-schaubilder generiert (ImageMagick + FFMPEG) und Vermutungen über das Dateiformat (Mime-Type, Format) erstellt. Bereits im Ingest wird auch die Benennung der unterschiedlichen Quell-pfade geachtet, sodass die Semantik der ursprünglichen Pfadstruktur beibehalten bleibt.

    TBBS – THE BORING BAGIT STORE: Storing digital art and cultural assets in a distributed storage infrastructure

    The paper introduces TBBS (The Boring BagIT Store) a tool for the distributed storage of digital data and cultural assets. TBBS responds to at least three requirements that smaller and medium size cultural institutions face to ensure the permanent storage and custody of their digital cultural assets: a) secure (encrypted) storage of archival data packages; b) distributed (asynchronous) storage, with possibly varying storage qualities; and c) easy to use storage administration with reasonable monitoring options. After a short introduction to the collection portfolio of the House of Electronic Arts Basel (HeK), which serves as a descriptive example for the determination of some of the standard requirements of TBBS, the article outlines the sub-elements of TBBS. The text starts with the GENERAL REPORT as a visible result of TBBS and then goes back step by step explaining the individual elements, technologies used and procedures.

    Preserving Media Art Objects and Digital Archives

    Presenting core areas of knowledge, which are to be covered the one way or another while pre-serving complex digital objects and digital art, the presentation is structured into three five parts: Part I: Media Art Examples: Short and selective overview Part II: Media Art Preservation: Programs and Strategies (1990s – 2015) Part III: Policies – Archival Appraisal – Sustainability & Accessibility Part IV: Case Studies Part V: Instead of a summary: getting prepared for the future. For obtaining a common terminological but also work-based basis for the discussion, the first part of the workshop begins with a historical overview of well-known media artworks (Part I) and groundbreaking preservation projects and conservation approaches (Part II). Part I is de-signed as kind of a dialog, combining the different perspectives from an art historical point of view and information science to approach media art. This section is followed by basic considera-tions on the conception and organization of digital archives (Part III). Here we try to illustrate specific requirements based on examples of our own professional practice. If time allows, the afternoon session concludes with a brief outlook on current funding policies (Switzerland, Ger-many and the EU), outlining core aims and requests such as open access, sustainability, interna-tional networking (all observed from the perspective of Data Management). Furthermore, expe-riences of EU evaluation and peer reviewing processes from an insider's perspective might be given – possibly in rather informal talk situations. This last section is designed in a rather generalized way to allow a smooth transition to a Q&A. Leaving some of time for questions and suggestions, we would be interested to learn something about the Russian side / approached in the sketched fields. The afternoon session will deepen the terms and concepts outlined in the morning session based on concrete case studies. It covers the entire preservation, maintenance and data management cycle. Since the foundation of permanent conservation operations depends on the quality of the identification and documentation of the significant properties of an artwork, special attention is given to this part. The spectrum of the presented works reaches from formerly videographic art-works through installation and net-based works until types of artworks that are no longer re-garded as closed in the classical archival sense. Again, there will be room for a Q&A at the end of the session.

    Der „integrierte Katalog“ der Mediathek der Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst FHNW Basel versammelt die wich-tigsten Informationsquellen der HGK und versucht, mithilfe von sinnstiftenden Daten-Layouts Informationskompetenz zu vermitteln. Im Folgenden werden Motivation und Hintergründe erläutert, da sich an der Oberfläche (Interface) die mediatheksseitigen Interessen und die nutzerseitigen Anforderungen und Recherchekonventionen treffen. Sie sind Be-standteil der fließenden künstlerischen, gestalterischen und wissenschaftlichen Kommunikation.

    Der Beitrag stellt den Laborcharakter der Mediathek der Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst FHNW Basel (HGK) vor und verdeutlicht anhand vom „integrierten Katalog“, wie der Einfluss der fortschreitenden Digitalisierung, die spezifischen lokalen und institutionellen Rahmenbedingungen sowie die wissenschaftspolitischen Anforderungen der künstlerischen und der Designforschung zur Profilbildung der Mediathek beitragen. Eine effiziente Kleinststruktur intern und eine grosse Offenheit für externe Anregungen und Kooperationen ermöglichen jene flexiblen und experimentellen Strukturen, die neben dem Normalbetrieb als Verbunds- und Fernleihbibliothek den spezifischen Charakter der Mediathek auszeichnen. The text presents the laboratory character of the Mediathek of the Academy of Design and Art FHNW Basel (HGK) and shows on the basis of the “integrated catalogue” how the ongoing digitization, the specific local and institutional framework and the academic policies, including artistic and design research, influence the profile of the Mediathek. An efficient internal microstructure and a great openness for external stimuli and collaborations enable flexible and experimental structures, which, in addition to the daily business as NEBIS Network library, characterize the typical nature of the Mediathek.

    Openness in den Künsten - Ein Praxisbericht der Mediathek HGK FHNW Basel

    Der vorliegende Text führt Aspekte der Offenheit in der Gegenwartskunst mit Fragen zum Open Access (OA) aus der Bibliothekspraxis zusammen. Am Beispiel des «integrierten Katalogs» der Mediathek Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst (HGK) FHNW wird gezeigt, wie durch die gezielte Bereitstellung von OA-Publikationen, durch offene kulturelle Inhalte sowie eine konsequent angewandte OpenScience-Philosophie Mehrwert entstehen kann. Zugleich zeigt sich das Entwicklungspotential und die Notwendigkeit von digitalen Werkzeugen, welche sowohl für das digitale Kuratieren von Daten benötigt werden als auch für die Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz geeignet sind.

    Exploring Friedrich Kittler’s Digital Legacy on Different Levels: Tools to Equip the Future Archivist

    Based on the example of Friedrich Kittler’s digital papers at the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach (DLA), this paper explores digital estates and their challenges on different logical levels within the pre-archival analysis, documentation and indexing process. As opposed to long-term digital preservation procedures, which are set about afterwards when relevant digital objects have already been identified, this process starts shortly after physical material (computers, hard drives, disks…) is delivered to the archive and has been ingested and safeguarded into volume image files. In this situation, it is important to get an overview of the “current state”: Which data was delivered (amount, formats, duplicates, versions)? What is the legal status of the stored data? Which digital objects are relevant and should be accessible for which types of users/researchers etc.? What kind of contextual knowledge needs to be preserved for the future? In order to address these questions and to assign meaning to both technological and documentation needs, the digital analysis tool “Indexer” was developed. It combines automated routines with human interaction features, thereby completing the necessary toolset for processing unstructured digital estates. It turns out however, that intellectual work and deep knowledge of the collection context still play an important role and must work hand in hand with the new automation efforts.
