Modelling the choice of Vietnamese adolescents between school and work

2019, Hulliger, Beat, Thu, Nguyen Thi Hong

Based on the Vietnamese Household Living Standard Survey (VHLSS) 2014, the factors of participation in education and/or labour market of Vietnamese adolescents in the age range 11 to 18 is studied. Children working too much, in particular at age 11 to 15, are actually in child labour, and also older adolescents may compromise their future due to sacrificing education for work. Many children in developing countries combine school and work and, in addition, the category inactive or ‘not in education, employment or training’ must be taken into account. Hence, the choice between four possible outcomes, school only, combining school and work, work only and inactivity, is analysed by a comprehensive discrete choice model. The conceptual model for our analysis considers, in addition to classical personal and household factors, also ethnicity, region, urbanicity and seven public development programmes. These factors are particularly important for the development policy of Vietnam. The complex design of the VHLSS needs proper weighting and adaptation of methods. Gender, age, income and the education of adults in the household have a strong impact on the choice. Ethnicity, urbanicity and regional disparities are relevant, too, but only two development programmes have a significant impact.

Two Measures for Sample Size Determination

2011-04-01T00:00:00Z, Eichenberger, Philippe, Hulliger, Beat, Potterat, Jann

Social surveys often must estimate the sizes or the proportions of many small groups and differences among them. The discussion of the needed precision of the estimators and the corresponding sample size is difficult, in particular when lay persons are involved. Two measures are developed which help in this discussion of the precision. These measures are called precision resolutions. The first of these measures, the size resolution, is derived from approximations to the probability of not observing a group in a sample and the second measure, the difference resolution, addresses the difference of two proportions. The precision resolutions are operationalisations of the smallest group or difference which can be estimated from a sample. Since they embody elements of statistical hypothesis tests without the need of a complete test specification they are simple to specify and nevertheless contain the necessary elements for sample size determination. The precision resolutions lead to the determination of the sample size for simple random samples but extensions to more complex samples are possible with the help of the design effect. The precision resolutions were developed for the planning of the Swiss Population Survey and this survey as well as the European Social Survey serve as examples of their application.

Imputation of Housing Rents for Owners Using Models With Heckman Correction

2012, Hulliger, Beat, Wiegand, Gordon

The direct income of owners and tenants of dwellings is not comparable since the owners have a hidden income from the investment in their dwelling. This hidden income is considered a part of the disposable income of owners. It may be predicted with the help of a linear model of the rent. Since such a model must be developed and estimated for tenants with observed market rents a selection bias may occur. The selection bias can be minimised through a Heckman correction. The paper applies the Heckman correction to data from the Swiss Statistics on Income and Living Conditions. The Heckman method is adapted to the survey context, the modeling process including the choice of covariates is explained and the effect of the prediction using the model is discussed.
