Sind es menschliche Wesen, die »reside at the center of any meaningful definition of sound« (Sterne 2003, S. 11)? Die begriffliche und konzeptuelle Bestimmung des Gegenstands stand bereits am Beginn der akademischen Profilierung der Sound Studies. Auch wenn Jonathan Sterne den fallenden Baum nur zitiert, um die vermeintliche Referenz zur abgehangenen Kontroverse eines Realismus vs. Konstruktivismus sofort zu negieren, hat dessen Begriffsbestimmung die Frontstellung der sich anschließenden Klangkonzept- und Gegenstandsdebatte lediglich verschieben können. Schon wenige Jahre später prallten ontologische und phänomenologische Positionen in den recht öffentlichkeitswirksamen Arenen von Konferenzen, Journalen oder Twitter aufeinander. Ausgehend von einer exemplarischen Gegenüberstellung der objektorientierten Ansätze von Steve Goodman oder Christoph Cox und der wahrnehmungsorientierten Zugänge von Jonathan Sterne oder Seth Kim-Cohen (Lavender 2017, S. 245) sollen konkurrierende theoretische Positionen historisiert und die mit ihnen verwobenen Gegenstandsbereiche, Forschungskontexte und Institutionalisierungen hör- und sichtbar gemacht werden. Eine kulturwissenschaftliche Erweiterung der Konzepte des Sonischen (Wicke 2008, Ernst 2015) unter dispositivanalytischer Perspektive möchte mit dem Vehikel des sonic display die verschiedenen Auftrittsweisen des Klanglichen ins Zentrum der Diskussion stellen und einen methodologischen Rahmen anbieten, der die konkreten und spezifischen historischen Bezugnahmen zu Sound einer jeden theoretischenVerabsolutierung voranstellt bzw. die theoretischen Hinsichten als spezifisch historische »theoretische Praxis« (Felsch, 2016, S.142) aus der Analyse hervorgehen lässt.06 - Präsentation

'Making' is a key concept that frames a host of more specific practices, lending characteristic manual/moral, communal/communicational, aesthetic/ethical, and enacted/ economic inflections and values. Even simple historical, traditional, technological, or digital acts of object and media creation, of art and design, but also of writing and thinking itself, can be recast as 'making'. - PublikationLetter from the editors: Lost & Found(Continent, 2016) Bruder, Johannes; Gerloff, Felix; Allen, Jamie [in: Continent]This issue was found in the lost conversations of continent.’s Jamie Allen and guest editors Johannes Bruder and Felix Gerloff. It is the crystallization of interests in the empirical, in notions of ‘evidence’, and the act of ‘returning’ something from a site of investigation. Developed through the Swiss National Science Foundation project Machine Love?[1], a project by researchers from the Institute of Experimental Design and Media Cultures at the Academy of Art and Design FHNW[2] (Claudia Mareis, Johannes Bruder and Felix Gerloff), these articles and artefacts stem in part from a workshop (All Eyes on Method in Basel on the 4th and 5th of June 2015) attended by contributing authors Sarah Benhaïm, Hannes Krämer, Luis-Manuel Garcia, Priska Gisler and Stefan Solleder. We also sought to expand the constituency of this continent. issue through a discussion of the role that media artefacts and material objects play in empirical research more generally. We have reached out to thinkers and doers who have developed ways of productively navigating the ambiguities of losing and finding, forgetting and remembering, capturing and deleting. Works by Geraldine Juarez, Mara Mills, Verena Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor with a response by Nina Jäger and Bronwyn Lay, Natasha Schüll, and the Times of Waste research team further elaborate the thematic of ‘Lost & Found’ for this issue.
