DroneLight. Background light evaluation for future quantum communication optical ground stations

| dc.description.abstract | This project evaluates background light levels for future quantum communication optical ground stations, focusing on up-link scenarios where detectors are placed on flying platforms. Using FHNW’s drone and high-altitude infrastructure, a gimbal-stabilized detector module - equipped with silicon and InGaAs photodiodes and single-photon avalanche diodes - will measure background illumination from 400–1550 nm while pointing toward the ground. Measurements at multiple locations, including urban areas and the Zimmerwald Observatory, will map background light and estimate its impact on quantum link performance. The results will determine wavelength-dependent noise, expected quantum bit error rates, and site requirements for reliable quantum communication. | |
