Sound in museums

Abstract

Sound in Museums examines how museums preserve, interpret, and present early sound technologies. Focusing on phonographs and gramophones as historical artifacts, it addresses the balance between conservation, accessibility, restoration, and public engagement. Particular attention is given to curatorial strategies for communicating technical and cultural significance to specialist and general audiences. The presentation also considers internationally recognized conservation standards, including ICOM criteria, and their influence on restoration and display decisions. It argues that thoughtful museum practice is essential for making early sound technologies both materially preserved and intellectually accessible.
