Voices in Wax: Exploring the Sound Technology of the Acoustic Era examines early commercial recording through historical research and empirical experimentation with original phonographs and gramophones. It argues that understanding production methods is essential for interpreting recordings’ influence on performance practice and musical style. Particular attention is given to recording and playback equipment and to critical approaches for studying pre-1950 audio media. By integrating technical analysis with artistic research, the project offers new perspectives on relationships among performers, machines, and recording technologies in early twentieth-century musical culture.
