Abstract
The use of game-based learning (GBL) in tertiary education has long been a controversial topic, hampered in part by a lack of empirical evidence. It is well-established that GBL is an effective learning method in elementary schools and that, in higher education, an increasing demand exists for alternative learning methods. This thesis investigates the acceptance and effectiveness of an SQL learning game at the FHNW and fills a gap in research on how applicable SQL games are. The work explored two areas of interest: student reaction to games as a vehicle for teaching and the effectiveness of games in teaching complex mathematically-based subjects. A game prototype was designed to incorporate the most current research on GBL. Pre-test, post-test and an acceptance survey based on an adaptation of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) were administered, with seven part-time students and sixteen full-time students....
