Abstract

This article examines how sound reproduction technologies transformed musical consumption, domestic life, and social practices in early twentieth-century Spain. Focusing on phonograph and gramophone advertising, it analyzes their transition from technical curiosities to symbols of modernity, refinement, and mass consumption. Particular attention is given to women as key mediators of domestic musical culture and consumer choice. Advertising emerges as a central agent in shaping listening practices, gender roles, class aspirations, and culturally specific meanings surrounding recorded sound.
