Abstract

Bassoon on Record examines early sound recordings as sources for reconstructing bassoon performance from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. Although solo bassoon recordings from this period are scarce, orchestral and operatic recordings preserve numerous passages in which the instrument can be studied. Combining solo examples with shorter ensemble excerpts broadens the evidence available for historical performance research. These recordings offer insight into changes in technique, articulation, phrasing, tone production, and aesthetic conceptions across successive generations of performers.
