The interplay between regulation and empowerment in games has shaped art, pedagogy, and science for centuries. During the Cold War, game theory emerged as a tool to analyze and regulate indeterminate processes. John Cage and David Tudor’s Composition as Process (1958) exemplifies this intersection in aesthetic practices. Michel Roth’s study bridges music analysis and discourse analysis using tools from game and systems theory. It examines post-1950 musical indeterminacy through case studies, including Cage, Xenakis, and Cardew, highlighting metaphors of liberation and control. The book also explores contemporary applications of game design in composition, performance, and music research.
