During the mid sixteenth century, Bavaria was bustling with polyphonic music. Throughout the course of his career at St. Anna’s Church in Augsburg, Adam Gumpelzhaimer (1559-1625) built up a rich archive of polyphonic music from his own works and collections of other musicians and composers in the area. Coupled with the extensive wealth and influence from the Aristocratic families of the Fuggers and Welsers residing in the region and red text on the Gumpelzhaimer Codex indicating specific instrumentation on vocal works one can create a clear picture as to the depth and vibrancy of musical life in Augsburg.
