Abstract

Máquinas parlantes: el arte de atrapar el sonido examines the cultural history of recorded sound in Spain and the technological and social transformations initiated by phonographs and gramophones. Its interdisciplinary contributions address sound reproduction, listening practices, popular entertainment, domestic life, collecting, advertising, and the recording industry. Drawing on the Biblioteca Nacional de España’s collections, the volume treats recordings and playback devices as material witnesses to changing cultural practices. It also emphasizes preservation and digitization as essential processes for safeguarding Spain’s sonic heritage and sustaining access to collective auditory memory.
