Abstract
Switzerland, though not being a member of the European Union (EU), implemented a revised data protection law. The new Federal Act on Data Protection (nFADP) has become applicable in September 2023. This regulatory change represents a challenge for micro-enterprises operating in or dealing with personal data, including customer, employee, or supplier data. Small businesses often face hurdles such as limited legal expertise, a lack of dedicated compliance staff, and difficulties adapting complex regulations to their specific needs. To help micro-enterprises navigate the new data protection law, there is a clear need for accessible knowledge and tools to support nFADP compliance. Through qualitative interviews with professional associations and a literature review, existing resources were analyzed, revealing a need for action. Identified research gaps included a lack of condensed, industry-specific guidance, and the absence of practical, step-by-step procedures tailored for small businesses. In response, an interactive online course was developed, offering a targeted, practical approach to nFADP compliance specifically designed for micro-enterprises. This course, which has undergone an initial evaluation, serves as a free resource that not only benefits micro-businesses but also provides a valuable foundation for educators and professionals focused on data protection compliance.
