Perspectives on human-computer interaction and culture
(Universität Basel, 2022) Linxen, Sebastian; Opwis, Klaus; Sturm, Christian
Due to the global distribution of technology and its use in highly culturally diverse settings, an understanding of culture, in particular the connection between culture and technology use, is becoming more relevant for distributors and developers of such technology, in order to survive in a dynamic market environment and to be able to offer products that are tailored to the requirements of the specific end user. Therefore, the overarching topic of this thesis is the exploration of the role of culture in human-computer interaction (HCI) as a key factor to understanding the user. This thesis sheds light on the role of culture and socio-cultural systems and their multi-layered manifestations in human-computer interaction. The related research consists of two main strands: The first strand (manuscript 1 and 2) focuses primarily on examining the extent to which national culture is considered in HCI studies, and the extent to which subjects from different national settings are part of HCI studies. The key findings of the first strand are that HCI research tends to neglect culture, or, if it is considered, it is mostly treated narrowly, as a single variable that measures national cultures. The restricted cultural perspective becomes further evident when studying the participant samples from the most relevant HCI conference. There was a strong focus on participant samples from countries whose inhabitants tend to be Western, educated, industrialised, rich and democratic (WEIRD) and most of the other countries were clearly underrepresented. The second strand of this thesis (manuscript 3 to 6) centres on the examination of the relationship between HCI and cultural as well as socio-cultural systems, particularly in knowledge-intensive practices. It shows the rich practices of technology appropriation in study settings outside of the typical WEIRD contexts. Furthermore, it explores the manifold, rich and often complex ways in which the use of technology is impacted by structures and practices of cultural systems, and, in the same way, transforms these systems. The results from both strands of enquiry show that the HCI community should consider the diversity of potential technology users in its research and recommendations. Only in this way can technological developments be realised that are globally useful and usable on a broad scale. To support the HCI community on this path, alongside suggestions for further research projects, this thesis presents several detailed recommendations on how to increase diversity and the consideration of cultural aspects in HCI research and the HCI community.

A flexible, extendable and adaptable model to support AI coaching
(Springer, 2023) Duhan, Ritu; Pande, Charuta; Martin, Andreas; Hinkelmann, Knut; López-Pellicer, Francisco J.; Polini, Andrea
We present a model based on coaching definitions, concepts, and theories to support AI coaching. The model represents the evidence-based coaching practice in different coaching domains by identifying the common elements in the coaching process. We then map the elements of the coaching model with Conversational AI design and development strategies to highlight how an AI coach can be instantiated from the model. We showcase the instantiation through an example use case of an HIV coaching chatbot.

Challenges, opportunities and application fields of quantum computing - an introductory overview
(Association Information et Management, 2022) Kech, Benjamin; Schneider, Bettina; Gachnang, Phillip; Azan, Wilfrid
This paper elaborates on the technology of quantum computing. It is aimed at people new to this field and introduces characteristics of quantum computing along with comparisons to classical computing. Furthermore, the paper describes the challenges and opportunities of quantum computing. In addition, applications have been explored where quantum computing could create value for businesses. The findings include three categories. First, quantum computing might make a difference in simulating nature, which was also the initial idea that led to the invention of quantum computing. Second, quantum computing could benefit the category of machine learning. Last, optimization problems will take advantage of quantum computing. It is concluded that quantum computing is still in its early stages and there are many challenges to overcome ‚ in particular the challenge of error correction. To gain in the foreseeable future from the advantages that quantum computing pledges, more advances in research have to be made to have a fault-tolerant system. A fault-tolerant quantum computer is a promising technology that could create significant value for various branches, such as finance.

The Swiss health care atlas - relaunch in scale
(Springer, 12.01.2023) Jörg, Reto; Zuffrey, Jonathan; Zumbrunnen, Oliver; Kaiser, Boris; Essig, Stefan; Zwahlen, Marcel; Schoch, Tobias; Widmer, Marcel
Inspired by the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care, an early version of the Swiss Atlas of Health Care (SAHC) was released in 2017. The SAHC provides an intuitive visualization of regional variations of medical care delivery and thus allows for a broad diffusion of the contents. That is why the SAHC became widely accepted amongst health care stakeholders. In 2021, the relaunch of the SAHC was initiated to update as well as significantly expand the scope of measures depicted on the platform, also integrating indicators for outpatient care in order to better reflect the linkages between inpatient and outpatient health care provision. In the course of this relaunch, the statistical and technical aspects of the SAHC have been reviewed and updated. This paper presents the key aspects of the relaunch project and provides helpful insights for similar endeavors elsewhere.
