Techniques of North: Sitting on Top of the World
(Sternberg Press, 2021) Allen, Jamie; Zyman, Daniela [in: Oceans Rising: A Companion to Territorial Agency: Oceans in Transformation]
Louis-Edmond Hamelin, the Quebecois elder statesman of northern geographies, has worked for half a century on fertile concepts such as “winterity” and “nordicity” in order to juxtapose real, extreme environments of high-latitude regions with the rich and complex ways they are perceived, imagined, depicted, and talked about. Hamelin even developed a “nordicity” scale, used by governments to allocate infrastructure and environmental resources. He named it the VAPO, or valeurs polaires. The VAPO is a composite and somewhat subjective measure that tracks ten different aspects—things like “annual cold,” “types of ice,” as well as “accessibility by means other than air” and “degree of economic activity”—rating each on a scale between 0 and 100. The total score, out of a thousand, must be over 200 for a place to be consid- ered “in the North.” The North Pole itself has a theoretical value of 1000, as VAPO as possible.

On the Modes of Technical Extraction in Chile
(Open Humanities Press, 2021) Allen, Jamie; Rossiter, Ned; Neilson, Brett [in: Logistical Worlds. Infrastructure, Software, Labor]
The diagram and essay On the Modes of Technical Extraction in Chile is a visual essay on the historical and contemporary extractive regimes affecting the southwest South American nation of Chile. It is a depiction arising from a collective research visit to the Valparaíso port systems, copper mines and communities of Chile for the Logistical Worlds project in March 2017. It attempts to draw out "how the long, narrow strip of land between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean that is Chile is continuing its long history of infrastructural-becoming."

What Do Proposals Propose? What Do Projects Project?
(Critical Media Lab, 2020) Allen, Jamie; Bandixen, Ina [in: We Will]
I submit to you, dear reader, a proposal: for the length of this essay, we՚ll think together about proposals, in relation to projects. I՚ll write out some ideas and, if you like, you can have a read through them, entirely at your own pace. We՚ll look at the idea and category of grey literature, a bit of critical history of the proposal–project and end with a further proposal: a way of thinking about the much maligned, common practice of proposal writing as a creative practice. A creative practice, no less, that potentiates means of rewriting, rethinking and recomposing knowledge practices, and the probable futures these can create.

The Earth is an Art, Like Everything Else
(Osage Publications, 2020) Allen, Jamie; Merewether, Charles; Zielinski, Siegfried [in: Art in the 21st Century: Reflections and Provocations]
The contributed chapter The Earth is an Art, Like Everything Else takes the the poem Lady Lazarus by Sylvia Plath and the related essay by Michael Taussig as a starting point for developing the ways in which digital art, media and creative practices might 'reattach' us to the earth. Fujihata's Masaki (literally) groundbreaking 1992 project, "Impressing Velocity (Mount Fuji)", in which the artist packed a rucksack with what then a rather large and heavy kit-of-parts — a serial GPS module, a laptop computer and a (then, not-commercially-available) head-mounted video camera — and climbed up the side of Mount Fuji, serves to example knowledge practices in the future in art, science, research and experience, that might ground and attach us more intimately to the planet and its processes.

    Unmaking. Against General Applicability
(Institute of Network Cultures, 2020) Allen, Jamie; Ibach, Merle; Büsse, Michaela; Gerloff, Felix; Bedö, Viktor; Miyazaki, Shintaro; Bogers, Loes; Chiappini, Letizia [in: The Critical Makers Reader: (Un)learning Technology]
As belief in the applicability and efficacy of DIY production, open-source, and method sharing has broadened to include institutional hackathons and open-data-fueled and civic 'maker weekends', taking stock and articulating how certain approaches 'work' or 'do not work' within maker culture – and for progressive and expansive creator cultures more generally – continues to be essential. 'Making' is a key concept that frames a host of more specific practices, lending characteristic manual/moral, communal/communicational, aesthetic/ethical, and enacted/ economic inflections and values. Even simple historical, traditional, technological, or digital acts of object and media creation, of art and design, but also of writing and thinking itself, can be recast as 'making'. What is it that happens to the thinking and doing of such activities, when such recasting is desired, chosen, projected, enforced, or assumed?

    How to be (Ir)rational
(Tropic Editions, 2019) Carver, Louise Emily; Allen, Jamie; Hamilton Faris, Jaimey [in: Almanac for the Beyond]
Almanac readers perennially write in to request advice. They want to know how to predict futures, and the terms of trade that might be available. This guide moves through the changing, strange nature of exchange in times beyond the Anthropocene, wherein worth is re-evaluated and values are liquidized.

    "Product Advertisement"
(Tropic Editions, 2019) Carver, Louise Emily; Allen, Jamie; Hamilton Faris, Jaimey [in: Almanac for the Beyond]
We know that the mensuration of key geo-constitutive elements, such as compositions of carbon, potassium and nitrate containment, as well as their retention and relation to productivity and quality, are of prime importance. We also know how frustrating the notoriously inaccurate and generalized surveys and estimates done by State Laboratory of Development and Production can be for operativity and productivity metrics. The Earth’s own servicing of human needs can vary greatly from pasture to paddock, from grasslands to pasturelands, from one’s European corral to another’s Canadian meadow.
