Innovative collaboration: Lessons from a regional cluster

2011-03, Bürkler, Erich, Rastrick, Karyn, Rodrigues, Mark

Clustering related organisations often results in better and more specialised suppliers, information spill-overs between companies, stronger labour pools and more creative competition between neighbours. The agro cluster in Hamilton NZ got generous public funding at the start but suffered from a lack of trust between public organisations and also with some private participants. Therefore it was stopped after the public funding expired.

India's global aspirations

2005, Bürkler, Erich

India is often placated as the future powerhouse in global services. What China has achieved in manufacturing is what one expects from India?s service industries, with internationally reputed Indian oftware companies, flourishing call centres and shining five-star hotels often serving as showcases. And it is India?s low labour costs that are often identified as the root of these successes. Labour cost advantages can be leveraged best in services, due to its limited automation possibilities ? vis-a-vis manufacturing. India, with its legions of highly educated English-speaking and success-hungry engineers and economists (besides the legendary entrepreneurial spirit), therefore, seems to be ideally positioned to become a global service powerhouse.

A regional innovative collaboration: Theory and practice

2011-03, Bürkler, Erich, Rastrick, Karyn, Rodrigues, Mark

Theory and Practice in public-private collaboration for innovation divert frequently. Different sectors with contrary incentives make it difficult to work together in applied research and product development. Close links like spin-offs from universities or long-term operational links facilitate the transfer from theory and public research to practice.

Dramatically different price developments for mobile services in India and Switzerland and their underlying drivers

2005, Bürkler, Erich

Purpose - By comparing prices for mobile services in India and Switzerland, this article aims to highlight marginal differences in regulations ? besides other significant factors ? which can result in totally different price developments.Design/methodology/approach ? A holistic approach is used to explain the various drivers behind price developments. Besides costs (including licence fees), customer behaviours (summarized in demand elasticity), competitive behaviour (explained by the applied marketing mix) and termination fees (either as a price stabilizer ? if not freezer ? or as a relatively marginal cost component) represent the relevant drivers.Findings ? The comparative study underlines the crucial role termination costs play in dynamic mobile markets ? besides the usually stressed general cost levels and numbers of competitors.
