Abstract
The research topic of this master thesis is a new business idea employing the messaging service WhatsApp in the field of learning management systems. The purpose of this project is to collect and evaluate consumer requirements and to conceptualize a new offer for the South African market. This research aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which focuses on providing quality education in South Africa. Design Thinking research methodology was applied to conduct an empathic analysis of the target users’ needs. A focus group, representing individuals with limited access to internet, a low level of digital literacy, and who are living in rural and developing areas of South Africa, was defined. Selected research instruments of the Design Thinking Toolbox by Lewrick et al. (2020) and the Google Design Sprint methodology by Knapp et al. (2016) were applied to gain a solid understanding of the users’ problems in the e-learning context, to perform an ideation workshop with selected experts and to develop a solution prototype and test it with real users.
