Abstract
Peter Benary's Second String Quartet is an interesting case of a composer's skeptical encounter with the movement of the musical avant-garde, and his personal and subliminal approach to the discourses and compositional techniques of his time. As the essay analytically shows, Benary succeeds in striking a balance precisely in the conservative foundation of unleashed musical processes and thus sheds light in his own way on the long-debated question of whether indeterminacy develops an audible quality.
