Abstract
Attitudes towards High German in German-speaking Switzerland turn out to be partly in conflict. This paper shows how these ambivalent attitudes become manifest in folk perception and evaluation of the language (situation), and, furthermore, that they can be disentangled by assuming various mental models to be responsible for the conceptualisation of High German.
