How and for whom do we design cities? This question is at the heart of contemporary urban planning, where the focus is shifting towards creating spaces for people rather than infrastructure. This thesis explores this paradigm through the lens of Basel’s urban development, particularly its Begegnungszonen (encounter zones). These zones prioritize pedestrian movement by limiting traffic speed to 20 km/h and transforming streets with specific furniture elements to enhance the quality of public spaces. During a six-month internship with Basel-Stadt, I engaged as a product designer to develop new furniture elements tailored to these encounter zones. The city of Basel aims to revitalize its public spaces with new urban furniture elements that are practical, sustainable, and community-oriented. This project focuses on the redesign of the existing elements: A bench and a plant pot. This collaboration with the Tiefbauamt (operations department) focused on meeting diverse requirements, including sustainability and CO2 balance considerations. The research question driving this thesis examines how product designers can influence urban public spaces by balancing creative freedom with the constraints and requirements of urban planning systems. The project aims to showcase the potential of design-led approaches in urban environments, fostering community engagement and enhancing residents’ quality of life. This interdisciplinary project integrates product design and visual communication, ensuring that the furniture concepts are not only practical and appealing but also effectively communicated to local residents. The development of a visual communication strategy, including a website and booklet with utilization concepts and legal guidelines, is crucial for the acceptance and proper use of these elements. A dedicated online platform can serve as a communication hub, promoting community involvement and ensuring the project's success. Ultimately, this thesis provides design recommendations for inclusive, sustainable, and engaging urban furniture. It underscores the pivotal role of product designers in urban planning, bridging theory and practice to create public spaces that reflect and cater to the evolving needs of society.
