Abstract
Some of the latest research on Social Network Analysis (SNA) and education shows that increased social network connectivity among students has benefits for their academic, social, and emotional development. Especially for students identified as having Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), Relational Inclusivity (RI) may act as a buffer for social exclusion, marginalization, and even bullying. This chapter explores how an SNA Toolkit may be utilized by teachers to understand and enhance RI for students who are at risk of marginalization and social exclusion. In making our case for the use of such a Toolkit, we begin by defining RI from a social network perspective. We then describe and outline the main functions of the SNA Toolkit and present an example of a teacher using the Toolkit to explore RI within their classroom. We then discuss data protection considerations. Finally, we formulate the implications of the SNA Toolkit in terms of how it can be used to explore and promote RI. Despite the ample research evidence that relationships matter for students, there is little practical and pedagogical framing on how to improve those relationships. The SNA Toolkit was created to contribute towards filling that gap in the pedagogical practice of teachers.
