Zusammenfassung
Community-Oriented Sharing Economy (COSE) initiatives, such as member-owned community spaces, fab labs, food sharing cooperatives and libraries of things, play a crucial role in fostering environmental and social sustainability while promoting a fairer distribution of goods and labor. By strengthening local communities and generating positive societal value, these initiatives align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 8, 10-12). However, despite their societal import, COSE initiatives face significant challenges that hinder their development and proliferation. Many of these challenges stem from digitalization and relate to platform design, including (a) trust issues within members and supporting platforms, (b) difficulties in effectively communicating social and personal benefits of participation and maintaining engagement, and (c) broader UX concerns that often disconnect COSE’s intentions from their digital implementation. While existing research has primarily examined COSEs from an organizational perspective, there is a critical need to explore how cultural norms shape UX design to better support participation, trust, and engagement on these platforms. This proposal is set to investigate how cultural dimensions influence UX design in COSE platforms through case studies in Brazil and Switzerland, as they are situated on the opposite sides of the cultural spectrum. The objectives are to identify key cultural dimensions that contribute to the UX for supporting participation, trust, and engagement, and develop culturally informed design considerations for these COSE platforms. Our methodology combines qualitative Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research with a system-building approach from Software Engineering. The research plan includes (i) user interviews and contextual inquiries in Brazil (as Swiss data collection will be completed beforehand), (ii) development of design considerations based on Hofstede’s cultural theory, and (iii) creation and partial validation of web-based prototypes for existing COSE initiatives in Switzerland and Brazil. Expected outcomes include (1) empirical insights into cultural differences affecting UX in COSE platforms, (2) a set of cultural constraints to guide UX practitioners in designing COSE platforms, and (3) interactive prototypes attaining to bespoke cultural peculiarities. Our collaboration across academic institutions in Brazil and Switzerland ensures complementary expertise and practical application of findings in their unique cultural contexts. This research bridges HCI, UX design, and Software Engineering to foster inclusive, culturally sensitive design of COSE platforms.
