Publikation New speakers on lost ground in the football stadium(De Gruyter, 2015) Del Percio, AlfonsoFootball is a key site for local pride to be enacted by fans through the celebration of local dialects and local myths. At the same time, sport industries are currently undergoing major transformations and becoming global, professional and profit-oriented. Consequently, pride in a place is not solely the property of the given area or its inhabitants. Indeed, fandom is increasingly enacted by new groups who speak different languages and live in other places, and who thus cross borders to consume local fan practices and tokens of imagined local authenticity. Furthermore, football clubs are increasingly owned by multinational investors who employ international and multilingual football workers. Meanwhile, nostalgic adherents of so-called traditional football frequently interpret the emergence of these transnational actors as a corruption of this sport. The presence of such transnational actors raises questions regarding the challenges encountered by these new speakers when they produce and consume cultural resources that are widely perceived to be not only the commodities sold by the football industry but also tokens of local authenticity. Drawing on an ethnography conducted in the stadium of the FC Basel in Switzerland, I discuss the case of two transnational actors who are identified as new speakers of Basel’s local dialect and of standard German, both codes being specifically associated with being a legitimate fan or coach of FC Basel. In discussing the challenges faced by these new speakers during their encounters with FC Basel as a commercial product, I examine how these individuals have constructed their legitimacy as members of FC Basel’s imagined community and analyze how, why, and by whom this legitimacy is given or contested.01A - Beitrag in wissenschaftlicher ZeitschriftPublikation The governmentality of migration. Intercultural communication and the politics of (dis)placement in Southern Europe(Elsevier, 2016) Del Percio, AlfonsoThe European Union and the Italian state have currently implemented a state infrastructure enabling to govern the migration flows towards Europe. This infrastructure has involved the formation of an ensemble of institutions, procedures, analyses and reflections that raise the efficiency of migrants' reception, integration or expulsion. Expertise on intercultural communication has been celebrated as a key resource of this infrastructure. In this article, I discuss the status of expertise on intercultural communication within an infrastructure managing migration in Italy. I focus on the circumstances by which expertise on intercultural communication has emerged as a crucial technology of this infrastructure and on ways this knowledge contributes to the regulation of migrants' access to the life projects migration stands for.01A - Beitrag in wissenschaftlicher ZeitschriftPublikation Engineering commodifiable workers. language, migration and the governmentality of the self(Springer, 2017) Del Percio, AlfonsoThis article examines the strategies and forms of expertise on language and communication mobilized to engineer commodifiable migrant workers. Drawing on an ethnographic account of counselling practices in a state-run Italian job guidance centre for newly arrived migrants, I examine the calculations, tactics, and forms of expertise on language and communication mobilised by job counsellors. Here, I illustrate how these tactics regulate, or “police”, migrants’ communicational conduct and promote their socialisation into a desirable professional self that can be commodified on the Italian job market. In doing so, I demonstrate that the state’s investment in the policing of migrants and the commodifiability of their labour is an investment in a larger project of societal consent for both the arriving migrants and for the forms of precarity they are believed to embody in Italy. At the same time, I argue this state agenda should not make us blind to the fact that the individuals and actors, including professional counsellors, working in these job guidance centres seem ready to invest a great deal into these spaces in the interest of pursuing another, more emancipated agenda. Indeed, in my paper I aim to demonstrate that job guidance centres are also spaces of hope where people work to support migrants who are preparing themselves for a viable future and attempting to create the practical framework for their life projects.01A - Beitrag in wissenschaftlicher ZeitschriftPublikation How to support customer segmentation with useful cluster descriptions(Springer, 2015) Witschel, Hans Friedrich; Loo, Simon; Riesen, Kaspar; Perner, PetraCustomer or market segmentation is an important instrument for the optimisation of marketing strategies and product portfolios. Clustering is a popular data mining technique used to support such segmentation – it groups customers into segments that share certain demographic or behavioural characteristics. In this research, we explore several automatic approaches which support an important task that starts after the actual clustering, namely capturing and labeling the “essence” of segments. We conducted an empirical study by implementing several of these approaches, applying them to a data set of customer representations and studying the way our study participants interacted with the resulting cluster representations. Major goal of the present paper is to find out which approaches exhibit the greatest ease of understanding on the one hand and which of them lead to the most correct interpretation of cluster essence on the other hand. Our results indicate that using a learned decision tree model as a cluster representation provides both good ease of understanding and correctness of drawn conclusions.04B - Beitrag KonferenzschriftPublikation Economic development in Mexico and the role of blockchain(Horizon Research, 2019) Zbinden, Fabian; Kondova, GaliaThis paper studies recent economic and political developments in Mexico and the potential role of blockchain technology in improving governance and fighting corruption in the country. Mexico badly needs innovative solutions to fight the persistent problems of corruption and inefficient governance. At the same time, blockchain, being a decentralized technology, promises to reduce administrative costs and ensure transparency in the public services. The paper takes stock of the current state of blockchain implementation in the economy and in the public administration of Mexico as well as studies the advantages and disadvantages related to the further outspread of the technology in the country. Moreover, the work aims at drawing policy recommendations as to the future role of blockchain in the public management and economic development in Mexico.01A - Beitrag in wissenschaftlicher ZeitschriftPublikation Effectiveness of policy and regulation in European sovereign credit risk markets - A network analysis(Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), 2019) Buse, Rebekka; Schienle, Melanie; Urban, JörgWe study the impact of changes in regulations and policy interventions on systemic risk among European sovereign entities measured as volatility spillovers in respective credit risk markets. Our unique intraday CDS dataset allows for precise measurement of the effectiveness of these events in a network setting. In particular, it allows discerning interventions which entail significant changes in network cross-effects with appropriate bootstrap confidence intervals. We show that it was mainly regulatory changes with the ban of trading naked sovereign CDS in 2012 as well as the new ISDA regulations in 2014 which were most effective in reducing systemic risk. In comparison, we find that the effect of policy interventions was minor and generally not sustainable. In particular, they only had a significant impact when implemented for the first time and when targeting more than one country. For the volatility spillover channels, we generally find balanced networks with no fragmentation over time.05 - Forschungs- oder ArbeitsberichtPublikation Adapt to the outside but stay true to your DNA. Report on the 5th International Conference on Credit Risk Analysis and Management(Duncker & Humblot, 2018) Westerfeld, Simone; Wullschleger, Beatrix01A - Beitrag in wissenschaftlicher ZeitschriftPublikation Credit rating and pricing: Poles apart(MDPI, 2018) Blöchlinger, AndreasCorporate credit ratings remove the information asymmetry between lenders and borrowers to find an equilibrium price. Structured finance ratings, however, are informationally insufficient because the systematic risk of equally rated assets can vary substantially. As I demonstrate in a Monte Carlo analysis, highly-rated structured finance bonds can exhibit far higher non-linear systematic risks than lowly-rated corporate bonds. I value credit instruments under a four-moment CAPM, between and within some markets there is no one-to-one relation between expected loss (rating) and credit spread (pricing). The linear CAPM beta is insufficient, buyers and sellers need also the same information on non-linear risk to have an equilibrium.01A - Beitrag in wissenschaftlicher ZeitschriftPublikation Breitbanderschliessung in den Zielgebieten der Neuen Regionalpolitik(Staatssekretariat für Wirtschaft SECO, 2019) Kuster, Jürg; Bösch, Lorenz; Heimsch, Fabian; Rach, Markus05 - Forschungs- oder ArbeitsberichtPublikation Rational and symbolic uses of performance measurement: Experiences from Polish universities(Emerald, 2019) Dobija, Dorota; Górska, Anna Maria; Grossi, Giuseppe; Strzelczyk, Wojciech01A - Beitrag in wissenschaftlicher Zeitschrift
