The video of the contribution is published online on the project's website.06 - PräsentationPublikation Stop or Go: A workshop on mobility, transport and storage of goods in the Southern region of Switzerland(13.05.2022) Gisler, Priska; Caviezel, FlaviaDuring the conference of the Swiss Artistic Research Network SARN, Flavia Caviezel and Priska Gisler (SARN working group Methods & Practices) conceptualize and organize a one-day workshop on mobility, transport and storage of visible and invisible, liquid, solid, ephemeral goods in the border region of Southern Switzerland; in collaboration with SUPSI. This workshop 'Stop or Go' offers the opportunity to discuss, reflect and experience ideas, wishes and artistic work while visiting two concrete sites that are both typical protagonists regarding the circulation and storage of material and ideal goods. The workshop consists primarily of two parts: The day will start with a site visit to the data storage centre CSCS Lugano. Intertwined with a tour, two artistic-research projects will be presented there. In the afternoon, we travel to Chiasso/Balerna in order to visit the bonded warehouse Punto Franco with a tour and get to know different approaches by two artistic and design researchers. Participatory Art Based Research (PABR) is one of them. Within the online event “Responses to Ways of Working Together”, experts and practitioners from the field of artistic research came together to discuss strategies, potentials and problems of PABR. Special guests Jamie Allen, Kai van Eikels, Anke Haarmann, Marijke Hoogenboom, Brandon LaBelle, and Isabelle Stengers were invited to respond to research formats that are documented on the online resource pab-research.de. Pab-research.de is the outcome of a two-year research process that evaluated and analysed 50 participatory research projects. Common characteristics of these projects were identified and extrapolated into research formats, that are now presented on the online resource to facilitate their transposition to and their use in other fields and contexts.06 - PräsentationPublikation Food Spectacles: Seeing Power, Eating Culture(2020) Odunlami, Abbey; Allen, JamieIn collaboration with conceptual artist and media-maker Abbéy Odunlami the workshop Food Spectacles: Seeing Power, Eating Culture takes up interests in artistic tactics for the redesign of urban metabolism, industrial agriculture and culinary cultures. We trace a history of food-art projects and trajectories that seek to change cultural norms and traditions, techniques and technologies of preparation, the design of spaces and places for eating, communications media, and other forms of metabolic meaning-making, narrative and poetry. The framing of the workshop critically examined Unesco’s SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities). What relationships between foods, cultures and ecologies can be more explicit and so re-made? What are the intersections of politics and infrastructures that are created by the sourcing, preparation and consumption of what we eat? What are the conditions of food sourcing, cooking and eating in our globalized, hyperconnected, capital-driven world? Aural Environments as Speculative Artefacts(xCoAx, 07/2021) Zeller, Ludwig; Rumori, Martin; Verdiccio, Mario; Carvalhais, Miguel; Ribas, Luísa; Rangel, AndréThe human imagination received a discursive gain regarding its societal and economic importance as a cognitive resource in the course of the 20th and 21st century. This situation motivated the emergence of imagination tech- niques of which we discuss several briefly in this paper. The various forma- tions of ‘speculative’ strategies within art and design can be seen as a recent extension to this tendency. While such strategies are usually predominantly visual, we suggested in our earlier research and practice (‘The Institute of Sonic Epistemologies’) that aural techniques might be equally suited to stim- ulate the human imagination, since such approaches leave the visual senses open for mental imagery in the human mind. We found these early explora- tions to be fruitful and decided to further our understanding of the aesthetic, fictional and medial factors being at work when aural environments trig- ger the human imagination. Against this backdrop, the present article is a working paper on ‘aurally induced mental imagery’ that covers a literature overview of the neuropsychology of the human imagination and discusses an eclectic corpus of sound work, which we query for the above-mentioned factors.04B - Beitrag KonferenzschriftPublikation Learning with M(18.03.2021) Volkart Schmidt, Yvonne; Spillmann, PeterGoing to the Limits of Your Longing, Research as Another Name for Care, the spring 2021 Master symposium at Art Institute HGK FHNW, in Basel, will be devoted to ideas and forms of artistic research that center art as a practice in service of the social. With this symposium we will revisit certain moments in our recent history and present of researching, producing, and exhibiting art in the name of such beliefs, namely social justice. To that end, this gathering will be dedicated to the memory of Marion von Osten, the artist, curator, researcher, writer, and teacher whose curatorial, theoretical, and altogether empathic approaches to the medium of exhibition-making revolved around artistic research devoted to the collective. In von Osten’s memory, and under her exemplary influence, we will examine the moments when exhibitions became filled with archives, with documents of testimonies and documentaries of testifying moving images. Institutions suddenly saw the need to create collective collections—like the Former West curatorial research project, for example. It was the beginning of a transformation that, since then, has undergone many turns and many faces, but that remains at the core of understanding art as a practice that serves the social and all the forms of justice (and its opposite) that enumerate it.06 - Präsentation
