Media Labs – Medienlabore als gestalterische Experimentier- und Forschungsräume
(Christoph Merian Verlag, 2017) Mareis, Claudia; Allen, Jamie; Langkilde, Kirsten
The contribution deals with ongoing research projects and methods being employed at the Academy of Art and Design’s Critical Media Lab and puts them into the context of current Media-Lab discussions such as the recently launched initiative “What’s a Media Lab” by Darren Wershler, Jussi Parikka and Lori Emerson, or the recently published book “New Laboratories” (De Gruyter 2016) by Charlotte Klonk of the BWG Cluster of Excellence in Berlin. These discourses at the interface of scholarly, scientific-technical and, above all, artistic research, focus, on the one hand, on situated practices and methods of experimentation and, on the other, address the hybridization and problematization of disciplinary and institutional knowledge and production spaces.

Critical Infrastructure: A Peer-Reviewed Journal About
    (01.06.2014) Allen, Jamie
The essay and ideas included here is a discussion of the topics raised through CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE, an artistic research and production residency that took place as part of the lead up to the transmediale festival, afterglow, 2014. The project’s initiation was about uncovering the resources and reserves of physical and material energies, signals and data that scaffold the very possibility of post-digital art-and-technology practices. Through a series of public workshops, and an installation project situated within the transmediale 2014 festival, CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE’s ‘post-digitality’ is not only historical-temporal, but immediate, and dredged up from below, in the present. The artistic project stemming from research and public events through the project creates a media-archaeological site-survey, revealing data and depth of the present moment of an art and technology festival.

    Affective-responsive Environments
(Zayed University Books, 2014) Torpus, Jan-Lewe
This paper describes the concepts, media settings, strategies and methods of a media art work and an artistic research project. Both apply psychophysiological biofeedback technologies as affective interfaces between humans and artificial artistically-staged environments. The paper includes a comparison of media art creation with artistic research processes and intends to identify possible synergies.

weg – das trinationale festival des spazierens
(05/2014) Brefin, Daniel; Schwander, Markus; Brenner, Leonie
Projektteam: Leonie Brenner, Markus Schwander, Daniel Brefin (Projektverantwortlicher)

    Grenzgang. When Promenadology Meets Library
(Springer, 04/2018) Lurk, Tabea; Schwander, Markus; Brefin, Daniel; Florenz, Beate; Münster, Sander; Friedrichs, Kristina; Niebling, Florian; Seidel-Grzesińska, Agnieszka
The text describes specific aspects of the documentation of the research project "Grenzgang" in the integrated catalogue of the media library of the Acad-emy of Art and Design (FHNW HGK). "Grenzgang – Artistic Investigations on Perception and Communication of Space in a Trinational Border Area" – is anchored geographically in Basel and the surrounding region, while its method can be located between artistic research and promenadology. References to research results from various project phases are documented with diverse analogue and digital media in the media library’s integrated catalogue. This catalogue attempts to display such artistic works in their hetero-geneity and variety and to make them accessible for research alongside other more classic library resources. The contribution submitted here elucidates typical challenges which can occur on the threshold of the catalogue/archive in the aftermath of complex artistic research projects. Specifically, the ques-tion arises of what happens when an active investigation like “walking” en-counters an apparently static collection facility like the media library.
