Dealing with an Open Stakeholder Society - An Investigation into the Camisea Project
    (Haupt, 2007) Schmitt, Ruth
The following book presents a textbook example of dealing with corporate social responsibility and a dynamic stakeholder environment through the Camisea case. The Camisea case, named after the Peruvian region in which Shells gas exploration project took place in the nineties, shows in detail how a company can learn from its negative experiences, and how it can turn them into a new form of governance to successfully lead projects that respect social, ecological and economic concerns. Managers are constantly reminded to be open and transparent with their stakeholders they should listen and learn in order to receive and maintain their licence to operate. This book demonstrates the kind of challenges that occur from these posits within a global and continually changing stakeholder environment. It is difficult for managers, economists, and business scholars to accept the fact that in projects similar to Camisea, a predefined management plan is not always the best plan to follow. Rather, new forms of governance similar to those comprehensively described in this book need to be applied.

Novartis: Demonstrating Leadership through Emissions Reductions
(Greenleaf Publishing, 01.11.2008) Mathews, Helen; Daub, Claus-Heinrich; Sullivan, Rory
This chapter analyses the reasons for Novartiss voluntary commitment to significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. It explores firstly the background to the corporate feeling of a moral imperative to reduce emissions. The wide range of internal measures taken to achieve the reduction target are then discussed, along with the challenges of implementing them in a decentralised firm. These internal measures include energy efficiency improvements, raising employees energy awareness and transitioning to a cleaner car fleet. As internal emission reductions are projected to be insufficient to achieve the target in the given time-frame, investments have also been made in external emission reduction projects. The chapter concludes that the implementation of the voluntary target may have increased shareholder value by lowering employee turnover, improving reputation, lowering exposure to future costs of carbon and lowering the cost of capital. Improvements in data capture systems are required to accurately quantify these effects.

Assessing the quality of Sustainability Reporting: an alternative methodological approach
    (Elsevier, 2007) Daub, Claus-Heinrich
Against the background of the growing importance in corporate sustainability reporting, the Institute for Sustainable Management at the University of OAS in Aargau, North-Western Switzerland, instigated a research project in 2003. This represents one of the first attempts to perform a quantitative and qualitative analysis of corporate sustainability reporting in one country (Switzerland) and is the second and, at the time, most comprehensive national study worldwide on reporting practices. The object of this paper is to reflect the methodology of the Swiss study independent of other procedures used to-date. The extent to which the new methodological approach overcomes the weaknesses of other approaches will primarily be demonstrated. Secondly, the research team's findings from the results of the study and interviews with managers from 25 Swiss companies in connection with the study will be presented.
