A semantically-enhanced modelling environment for business process as a service
(IEEE, 2017) Hinkelmann, Knut; Kurjakovic, Sabrina; Lammel, Benjamin; Laurenzi, Emanuele; Woitsch, Robert; Li, Gang; Yu, Yale
In this paper we present a hybrid modeling approach which supports the continuous alignment of business and IT in the cloud. Business Process as a Service provides the end-to-end cloud support for business processes instead of single applications. A graphical modelling environment allows non-technical modelers to design business processes and to specify requirements in human-interpretable way. Via semantic lifting, the graphical models can be annotated with classes and values from an enterprise ontology. The BPaaS Ontology contains the relevant classes for the smart Business and IT-Cloud alignment. It supports the modeler in using a standard terminology and thus ensures consistent modeling. A Modelling Environment for Business Process as a Service
(Springer, 2016) Kurjakovic, Sabrina; Lammel, Benjamin; Woitsch, Robert; Kritikos, Kyriakos; Hinkelmann, Knut; Krogstie, John; Mouratidis, Haralambos; Su, Jianwen
Business processes can benefit from cloud offerings, but bridging the gap between business requirements and technical solutions is still a big challenge. We propose Business Process as a Service (BPaaS) as a main concept for the alignment of business process with IT in the cloud. The mechanisms described in this paper provide modelling facilities for both business and IT levels: (a) a graphical modelling environment for processes, workflows and service requirements, (b) an extension of an enterprise ontology with cloud-specific concepts, (c) semantic lifting of graphical models and (d) SPARQL querying and inferencing for semantic alignment of business and cloud IT.

Smart Stability – Market-economic interaction of smart homes for improved power network stability
(2015) Lammel, Benjamin; Schulz, Nicola; Bichsel, Jürg; Wache, Holger; Farooq, Abdul; Hoffmann, Caroline; Mettler, Fabian
In this article, the "SmartStability" concept is introduced and first results are shown. The concept is based on the exchange of electrical energy within a network of households that possess temporal flexibilities in consuming or providing energy from or to the network. The exchange is governed by a market-economic negotiation principle between the households. Temporal flexibility is achieved by exploiting thermal capacities of the buildings themselves and those of warm water storages, and by allowing certain temperature bands. Electric and thermal energy forms are coupled by means of heat pumps and electric water boilers. The physical energy exchange takes place via the electrical grid. The behaviour of a SmartStability network has been simulated, based on physical models of the energetic resources within each network unit, and by interlinking the individual units to form the entire SmartStability network within a multi-agent environment. Goal of several simulation scenarios was the adaptation of the time-dependent power consumption profile of the network to a given schedule. Networks consisting of 5 to 100 houses have been simulated. The simulation results show that deviations from schedule can be reduced by approx. 50% by the market-economics-based self-optimization and the resulting intelligent operation of resources. By additionally using battery storages, the deviation from schedule can be further significantly reduced.

Der Weg in die Cloud. Einfach gemacht
(Swiss Professional Media, 31.03.2015) Giovanoli, Claudio; Gatziu Grivas, Stella; Lammel, Benjamin
