ICT and Innovation in Small Companies
(2007) Schubert, Petra; Fisher, Julie; Leimstoll, Uwe
The small business sector is very important to most economies generating significant wealth and employment. It has generally been accepted that small business owners are less likely to embrace innovation and less likely to have a well-defined business strategy. Yet for companies to grow and continue to be successful innovation is critical. Given the importance of this sector there is a need for governments and policy makers to understand innovation in small business particularly in terms of ICT implementation and use in order to formulate appropriate programs and policies. There have been few studies reported in the literature however, that have looked at innovation in the small business sector. This study investigated small Swiss businesses with 10 to 49 employees. A survey of 389 small businesses found that most see themselves as innovative and most use IT to support innovation.

User interface integration in corporate travel management: the case of the CWT Connect portal
    (2004) Schubert, Petra; Voss, Andreas
This paper argues that technical integration is not the only reasonable choice in situations where access to data and functionality from different sources is critical. Rather, user interface integration, an approach in which integration takes place primarily in the mind of the user, can be a more favorable option. In this paper, CWT Connect, a travel management portal developed by Carlson Wagonlit Travel, is taken as a case of user interface integration. The paper starts with outlining frequent problems in integrating information systems and discusses how the portal metaphor is related to integration. The case of CWT Connect and its application at electrical engineering provider Cegelec is then depicted in detail.

Outsourcing of ICT: An Empirical Study in Swiss SMEs
    (2007) Schubert, Petra; Leimstoll, Uwe
Results from a longitudinal study on the importance and use of information and communication technology in Swiss small and medium-sized companies provide the basis of this paper. In an empirical survey, 901 questionnaires were collected and analysed. The results were weighted according to company size and industry sector and are representative for Switzerland. The data was used to run an extensive cluster analysis. Based on the identified clusters, several bivariat analyses were performed in order to identify the typical outsourcing behaviour of the clusters. The clusters were tested against four different statements regarding (1) experiences with outsourcing, (2) degree of outsourcing (buy or rent), (3) IT know-how, and (4) influencers for outsourcing. The results have a high statistical validity and allowed us to draw conclusions about the typical behaviour of cluster members.

Eine Segmentierung des Marktes tut also Not.

ICT Outsourcing in the Swiss SME Sector: Conclusions and Typcial Company Clusters
(2008) Leimstoll, Uwe; Schubert, Petra; Fisher, Julie
The outsourcing of ICT services has been common place in large organizations for many years. To date, most of the published research has focused on large organizations with very limited discussion exploring outsourcing in small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This paper reports on a major study (based on 900 completed questionnaires) of Swiss SMEs and their approach to outsourcing. The results presented in this paper are weighted according to company size and industry sector and are in this respect representative for Switzerland. The findings are presented in four main conclusions and six identified clusters (typical company profiles). ICT outsourcing for SMEs is primarily focused on Maintenance and Support. The majority of SMEs using outsourcing have achieved positive outcomes as a result. Smaller SMEs are more likely to consider outsourcing than their larger counterparts. Suppliers of external ICT services specialised on selective, definable services seem to be at an advantage.
