Implementing the AoL standard for the WI and BIT curricula in AACSB – Lessons learned at the FHNW

Before 2014, the quality management process in all our programs has been rather informally and individually organized. In 2014, the management of the School of Business at the FHNW decided to set up a strategic project to achieve the AACSB accreditation to sustainably secure the role among the best business schools. Among other standards, AACSB deals with Assurance of Learning (AoL, standard 5 in the 2020 standards) with the clear goal formulated as "The school uses well-documented, systematic processes for determining and revising degree program learning goals; designing, delivering, and improving degree program curricula to achieve learning goals; and demonstrating that degree program learning goals have been met." The AoL process has been established step by step since 2015 and provided us with a guideline to check the mission-reference of our program goals and learning objectives and to continuously develop the program quality on a common database. This paper describes the implementation of AoL using the four steps "Determining Degree Program Learning Goals", "Measure", "Results" and "Closing the Loop" for the bachelor programs WI (in German "Wirtschaftsinformatik") and BIT (Business Information Technology). As examples, measurements and improvements for various modules (spanning from supply chain to the computer science domain) are discussed, underpinning the clear and significant progress in the management of curricula and in the monitoring of our study programs’ effectiveness regarding student learning. Finally, we outline selected AoL initiatives at other universities and show how we can benefit from them to successfully enhance our project.

Das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Bildung und Innovation

Wer aktuell ein neues Notebook erwerben möchte, der sieht oft den Sticker: Ready for Cortana. Aber wer hat dies schon einmal als Frage an sich selbst gestellt? Sind wir ready for Cortana? Dem Scharnier zwischen Tastatur und Bildschirm kommt schon fast symbolische Bedeutung zu. Lösen wir uns langsam aber sicher von Tastatur und Maus? Wie interagieren wir mit unseren Computern? Die Visionen sind schon lange klar. Geprägt wurden sie schon in den 1960er Jahren durch den Bord Computer von Raumschiff Enterprise oder in den 1980er Jahren durch Knight Rider, bei dem Michael Hasselhoff durch Kitt, einem selbstfahrenden Auto mit künstlicher Intelligenz in seiner Rolle als High‐Tech-Kriminalagent unterstützt wurde. Die Realität nähert sich langsam aber stetig den Visionen, oft unbemerkt von der breiten Öffentlichkeit. Viele ignorieren Siri auf dem iPhone, OK Google auf dem Android Device und auch der aktuell bei gut der Hälfte der Notebooks im Laden angebrachte Sticker „ready for Cortana“ bleibt oft unbeachtet.

Digital transformation: corporate social responsibility of food safety In Vietnam

Unsafe food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances, causes more than 200 diseases – ranging from diarrhoea to chronic diseases such as cancers, and it creates a vicious cycle of disease and malnutrition, particularly affecting children and older people. Diseases caused by unsafe food claim an estimated 2 million lives globally each year . In this paper, to discuss how digital transformation aligns with corporate social responsibility and the immediate action required in order to keep safety and quality along the food supply chain in Vietnam.

Nicht nur internationale Konzerne, sondern auch KMU stehen zunehmend unter dem wirtschaftlichen Druck, IT effizienter einzusetzen. Vermehrt kommen dafür auch Services aus der Cloud als eine zusätzliche Möglichkeit zur Prozessunterstützung hinzu. Damit wird die als "Make or Buy" bekannte Entscheidung um die zusätzliche Option des "Rent" erweitert. Um hier die richtigen Entscheidungen zu treffen, braucht es Leute, die sowohl die IT als auch das Business verstehen.

Checking the students aptitude for a bachelor program: experiences with a web-based tool

Research Abstract: Checking the student’s aptitude for a Bachelor program: Experiences with a Web-based tool Research Objectives: In autumn 2014 the Bachelor program „Business Information Technology (BIT)” has been launched. BIT is about the application of information technology in business with the focus on building information systems. Since several terms, it can be observed that a considerable number of students faces difficulties in modules related to programming and mathematics at the beginning of the study. In order to monitor the aptitude of the program for beginners a project was launched with the aim to develop a method and a web-tool supporting the self-assessment related to indispensable competencies in the BIT program. Methodology: The aptitude test - built with Google Forms - currently consists of 31 predefined multiple choice questions and calculates an overall aptitude value and single aptitude values for the main categories logical and analytical thinking, understanding algorithms and abstract thinking. The questions are taken from well-established test systems like ELIGO-System, BOMAT, CASA etc. and are typically solved within less than 45 minutes. The students can check their suitability for the study programme by comparing their overall aptitude value with a given threshold. First test runs conducted with the tool confirm the validity of the aptitude test. The future scope will involve more students and deal with an analysis of concrete weaknesses that can be used as input to adapt the settings of programming and mathematics modules.
