Abstract
This article analyses the philosophical underpinnings of mathematical modelling with the focus on the modelling cycles in mainstream mathematics education. Due to its background of epistemological representation, the main focus is set on Kantian philosophy. I argue that representational thinking leads to a problematic view on mathematics and its relation to reality. Finally, I outline an alternative approach to mathematical modelling according to Deleuze’s differential ontology.
