    The NetAcademy - A Novel Approach to Domain-specific Scientific Knowledge Accumulation, Dissemination and Review.

    Over the last decade the speed at which knowledge is generated has greatly accelerated, thus exacerbating the problem of finding the right information at the right time and posing new kinds of challenges to the management of an ever increasing pool of knowledge. Taking up the ideas of the ancient Greek concept of Academia, the ?NetAcademy? is aiming at providing a knowledge medium to aid in the creation, integration, reviewing and dissemination of domain-specific knowledge in the scientific community taking full advantage of the unique characteristics of the Internet medium. The vision is to offer an open structure and management concept for virtually any kind of field of research in search of an intelligible organization of its contents.The paper emphasizes on the motivation of the NetAcademy concept and its feasibility on the basis of available Internet technologies.

    Das Internet bzw. der darauf aufsetzende multimediale Mehrwertdienst World Wide Web (WWW) wird heute von den meisten Teilen der Wirtschaft als die ?enabling technology? für Anwendungen der elektronischen Geschäftsabwicklung, den ?Electronic Commerce?, betrachtet. Die globalen und heute allgemein verfügbaren Telematikinfrastrukturen auf der Basis des Internet bilden die Grundlage für das Entstehen offener, elektronischer Märkte (EM) [Schmid95a S. 18ff.]. Elektronische Zahlungssysteme sind ein entscheidender Faktor für den Erfolg der elektronischen Geschäftsabwicklung und damit elektronischer Marktplätze. Digitale Zahlungsmittel bilden - analog zu traditionellen Marktplätzen - das Schmiermittel der elektronischen Marktplätze, dem Marketspace. Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft arbeiten heute mit Hochdruck an innovativen Lösungen für die komfortable, sicherere und ökonomische Zahlungsabwicklung in offenen Netzen wie dem Internet.

    The EMBG Reference Model on Electronic Markets: The Korean Case of Jodal

    The Reference Model on Electronic Markets was developed to provide an overview of the different organizational as well as technical aspects one should pay attention to when assembling a comprehensive Electronic Commerce System. The model was developed by the Electronic Business Media Group (EBMG) at the Institute for Information Management (University of St. Gallen, Switzerland). In this paper we are applying the Reference Model on Electronic Markets onto the special case of the JODAL project that deals with the continuos IT-support of the procurement process within the public sector in Korea. In the end, one of the JODAL aims will be the integration of existing EDI procedures with newly built-up EC applications on the Internet. So far, only big companies could afford to apply EDI effectively.

    Web assessment - A model for the evaluation and assessment of successful electronic commerce applications

    The original reason for the research was triggered by a disappointment felt by the authors when using the Web as research tool and business medium. Many sites feature fancy graphics, well organized content, but rarely a site induces the visitor to come back on a regular basis (with exceptions of course). The electronic commerce revolution some predicted experiences a setback due to a lack of consumer interest and some potential customers turn their screens rather off than meddling their way through a purchase order. But why are customers so indifferent?In fact most of the early World Wide Web entrance strategies have been rather driven by the inclination of an early adopters? strategy ?it is participation that counts?, than a sound business model for electronic commerce. Thus many companies and institutions discovered with surprise, that the comparatively modest budgets allocated to the development of their Web sites did not always guarantee success.

    A Framework for the Analysis of Socio-Economic Aspects of Electronic Markets

    The Internet still lacks global acceptance of being a platform for user-friendly, trustworthy Electronic Commerce. Latest research in the field of Electronic Markets shows that there are, without any doubt, a number of socio-economic (social, psychological as well as economic) criteria which represent critical success factors for the global breakthrough of electronic shopping applications. Usually, forecasts on Electronic Commerce development focus on technical aspects, such as telecommunication infrastructure, security and speed. The following paper presents a theoretical framework for the evaluation of the socio-economic aspects to which all electronic business relations are also subject. The empirical results stem from the business case of the Electronic Mall Bodensee (EMB), an existing mall with more than 400 partners, companies as well as organisations, and universities, in the Lake Constance region (Switzerland, Germany, Austria).

    How to Do Computer Ethics - A Case Study: The Electronic Mall Bodensee

    In this article the authors present a model of ethical analysis and decision making for the field of computer ethics--a model that actually works for all areas of applied ethics. It is argued that a rich and complex fabric of ?policies for conduct?--a ?received policy cluster (RPC)--is used by computer ethics decision makers in a dynamic process similar to Rawls?s ?wide reflective equilibrium? (WRE). This ?policy-cluster model? makes use of Moor?s classic definition of the field of computer ethics and van den Hoven?s suggested use of Rawlsian WRE.

    Taking up the ideas of the ancient Greek concept of Academia, the ?NetAcademy? is aiming at providing a knowledge medium to aid in the creation, integration, reviewing and dissemination of domain-specific knowledge in the scientific community. In pursuit of these goals it is taking full advantage of the unique characteristics and potential of the Internet medium. The NetAcademy is an existing web information system (WIS) which was developed in order to support the building of virtual scientific communities for different research fields.

    Seit einiger Zeit erfährt der Begriff ?Community? wieder eine starke Verbreitung, nicht zuletzt aufgrund der explosionsartigen Verbreitung des Internets und dessen Akzeptanz. Auch im Bereich Aus- und Weiterbildung tragen neue Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien zu Veränderungen bei. Wissen kann schneller, effizienter und in einer global zugänglichen Form gesammelt, generiert, geteilt sowie verteilt werden. Neue Formen des Lernens und des Lehrens etablieren sich. Das Konzept der ?Learning Communities?, die basierend auf einer Internet-Plattform auch eine ?Virtuelle Gemeinschaft? charakterisieren können, stellt dabei ein neuer Ansatz dar.Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit diesem Konzept der virtuellen Lerngemeinschaften. Im Vordergrund steht dabei das Design eines Mediums, das als Basis zur Gemeinschaftsbildung dient.

    Konsequenzen technologischer Innovationen für die Vielfalt des Produktangebotes in elektronischen Märkten

    Das Internet, elektronische Märkte und innovative Kommunikationstechnologien sind Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit. Die globale Diffusion des Internet und permanenter Fortschritt von Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie, tragen zur Weiterentwicklung von elektronischen Märkten bei. Virtuelle wie auch konventionelle Unternehmen agieren auf den o.g. Märkten, um neue Formen der Leistungserbringung zu etablieren. Die globale Verfügbarkeit von Informationen sowie die Konvergenz der Kommunikationskanäle zu einer digitalen Plattform, sind Kennzeichen für den Übergang vom Industrie- zum Informationszeitalter. Technologische Innovationen wie bspw. das Telefon oder das weltumspannende Computernetzwerk (Internet), zählen zu den Entwicklungen, die in erster Linie die Art und Weise wie Menschen miteinander kommunizieren, neu gestalten. Die o.g. Technologien können als Primäreffekte bezeichnet werden.

    Web Assessment: Applied to the Agreement and Settlement Phase

    One of the most profound consequences of the ongoing information revolution is its influence on how economic value is created and extracted. The new information infrastructure redefines the relationships between buyer, seller, and middleman, allowing new ways of accessing and tapping information, and price arrangements. Most importantly the information about a product or service may be separated from the product or service itself. Consider how most books are sold today: most are sold in bookstores all around the country. When Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com set up his online bookstore in Seattle in 1995, he saw an opportunity to change the marketplace. He created a virtual bookstore, holding more than 2.5 mil. titles, about ten times as many as even the biggest bookstore in the physical world. For best-sellers, Amazon charges 40% below list price, for nearly everything else, at least a 10% applies. Result: sales of $16 mil.
