Publikation The separation of mathematics from reality in scientific and educational discourse(Springer, 10.06.2018) Schürmann, Uwe; Ernest, PaulThis contribution aims to illustrate that the separation between mathematics and reality is an outcome of several shifts in historic mathematics discourse. Therefore, Foucault’s method of problematisation and Deleuze’s distinction between axiomatic and problematic formalisation in mathematics are used to emphasize these shifts. Afterwards, a special attention is paid to mathematics teaching in German history. Here, it will be considered how reality was treated in the mathematics classroom due to the socio-political circumstances at a particular time.04A - Beitrag SammelbandPublikation Towards an alternative approach to modelling in school mathematics(University of Montana, 08.01.2018) Schürmann, UweThis article analyses the philosophical underpinnings of mathematical modelling with the focus on the modelling cycles in mainstream mathematics education. Due to its background of epistemological representation, the main focus is set on Kantian philosophy. I argue that representational thinking leads to a problematic view on mathematics and its relation to reality. Finally, I outline an alternative approach to mathematical modelling according to Deleuze’s differential ontology.01A - Beitrag in wissenschaftlicher Zeitschrift
