    Identifying the enablers and inhibitors of organizational learning in the context of IT governance: an exploratory Delphi study

    Despite significant investments in training, many organizations fail to implement IT Governance. This problem is known as theory-practice gap. Organizational Learning has been suggested as an approach to overcome this problem but there is still lack of understanding about how Organizational Learning applies to the context of IT Governance. Therefore, this exploratory study presents insights from a Delphi study that was conducted to identify and rank enablers and inhibitors of Organizational Learning in this context.

    Digitale Transformation für Nachhaltigkeit: Eine notwendige technische und mentale Revolution

    Digitale Technologien und Innovationen verändern unsere Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft wie nie zuvor. Unternehmensleitende und Führungskräfte sind jedoch an einem Punkt angelangt, an dem sie die Art und Weise überdenken müssen, wie Unternehmen die digitale Transformation nutzen können, um sich den Herausforderungen der Nachhaltigkeit zu stellen. Da Organisationen im Kontext der Gesellschaft agieren, beeinflussen viele Faktoren wie soziale Strukturen, politische Entscheidungen, allgemeine wirtschaftliche Trends und technologische Entwicklungen ihre Tätigkeit. Um erfolgreich zu sein, muss sich eine Organisation dieser Veränderungen bewusst sein und gleichzeitig in der Lage sein, sich mit ihnen auseinanderzusetzen. Ausgehend von dieser Sichtweise skizzieren wir einen integrierten Rahmen, der die verschiedenen Stufen der „Digitalität“ mit den notwendigen Veränderungen in der Managementpraxis verbindet, um die Untersuchung von Organisationen zu unterstützen. Weitere Forschung ist notwendig, um besser zu verstehen, wie sich die Managementpraxis verändern muss, um digitale Technologien für eine fortlaufende, lernbasierte Engagementstrategie zu nutzen. Dies erfordert, dass sich Führungskräfte ihres eigenen Denkens bewusst werden, ihre bisherigen Überzeugungen aufgeben und sich auf organisatorisches Lernen und Experimente mit den Beteiligten einlassen.

    Digital transformation for sustainability: a necessary technical and mental revolution

    Digital technology and innovations are transforming our economy and society as never before. However, business leaders and managers are at a point where they need to rethink the way business can leverage digital transformation in order to support engagement with sustainability challenges. As organizations operate in the context of society, many factors such as social structures, political decision-making, general economic trends, and technological development, influence their operations. To be successful, an organization must be aware of these changes and at the same time be able to engage with them. Based on this viewpoint, we outline an integrated framework linking different levels of “digitalness” with necessary changes in managerial practice to support organizational inquiry. More research is necessary to better understand how the practice of management needs to transform in order to leverage digital technologies for an on-going, learning-based engagement strategy. This requires awareness of one’s own thinking, suspension of one’s prior beliefs, and engagement in organizational learning and experimentation with stakeholders.

    Die Interdependenz von Digitalisierung und Nachhaltigkeit als Chance der unternehmerischen Transformation

    Digitalisierung und Nachhaltigkeit werden die zwei großen Veränderungsbeschleuniger der kommenden Jahre sein. In Anbetracht des Umfangs und der Geschwindigkeit, in der sich die Rahmenbedingungen für sie weiterhin für ihre Kunden am besten Probleme lösen und gleichzeitig einen Beitrag zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung leisten können (Hoffmann 2018). Digitalisierung und Nachhaltigkeit werden die zwei großen Veränderungsbeschleuniger der kommenden Jahre sein und dazu führen, dass sich die Regeln für die Unternehmenswelt ändern. Somit ist digitale Transformation weit mehr als die Digitalisierung von bestehenden Prozessen in einem Unternehmen (Staudt 2019). Digitale Transformation bedeutet, dass Unternehmen ihre Unternehmensstrategie und Denkweise hinterfragen und ggf. neu ausrichten müssen. Dies hat zur Folge, dass zukunftsfähige Unternehmen digitale Technologien und Fähigkeiten sowie nachhaltigkeitsorientierte Praktiken in innovativen Geschäftsmodellen zusammenführen müssen, um den Herausforderungen und Chancen einer digitalisierten Nachhaltigkeitsgesellschaft gerecht zu werden. Technologie stellt hierbei nur einen „Enabler“ dar.

    Cybersecurity dynamics in software development environment. What system traps do exist?

    Increasing dependency on information technology and an increasing number of cyber-attacks give rise to concerns about secure software development methods. Building system dynamics models we research and compare the structure underlying the behaviour relevant to security software developments for both agile and traditional software delivery methods. The difference between these models is related to the key characteristics of these methods, but not to the security aspects itself. Both dynamic models show similar structures to developing software and cybersecurity dynamics. Our study shows that network externalities may evoke the acceptance trap. The acceptance trap begins when insecure software is brought into production and is actively used, because if software is available, it can generate income, while further security development will cost more money. Insecure software means the software still contains vulnerabilities that can be exploited by cybercriminals in near future. In order to exploit these vulnerabilities cybercriminals will launch cyber attackers. In such situation there may be a contamination effect caused by successful attacks may evoke more cybercriminal activities. These ongoing cyber-attacks will have such an impact that more and more security improvements and incident responses are needed, which result in increasingly higher costs. As a result, less capacity will be available for future software development. The model structures suggest that more time and money spent on security testing and resolving vulnerabilities helps to avoid the acceptance trap. Similar conclusions have been formulated in the field of Internet of Things adaptation research. Further model quantification, validation, and policy evaluation should provide further insights and recommendations to resolve the acceptance trap.

    Creating social impact with startup incubator programs for refugees. Using social entrepreneurship to accelerate integration

    Focusing on social business model innovation at the example of startup incubator programs for refugees, this research provides insights into how such programs can create social impact. With the importance of social integration in mind, the guiding question for this work is how social entrepreneurship in the form of startup incubator programs for refugees can create social impact by addressing key challenges of integration. Based on a literature review and interviews with refugees and integration experts, it appears that challenges primarily relate to language skills, professional qualifications, psychological stress and discrimination. While conventional standardized integration programs address some of these issues, gaps remain that slow down integration. This is where startup incubators can make a difference. For instance, they offer personalized coaching and mentoring to allow for individual needs and to empower participants to develop and deploy their potential. Further, they help participants build a strong personal network in the local ecosystem. Moreover, entrepreneurial skills are developed to prepare participants for self-employment as an alternative to the difficult job search. Overall, this work illustrates that social innovation of startup incubator programs for refugees can accelerate integration and create social impact.

    Entrepreneurship for sustainable innovation. Changing the system to the better

    Sustainability challenges represent some of the most significant business opportunities of the century. Capturing these opportunities, however, will require significant innovation: not just in technologies and products, but also in processes, business models, as well as research. We argue that a rethinking and sharpening of the definition and the role of sustainable entrepreneurship is needed. How can sustainable entrepreneurship for systemic change be defined and differentiated from 'conventional' entrepreneurship in order to make sustainability-oriented innovations (SOI) happen and changing the system to the better? Building on the on-going entrepreneurship initiatives at FHNW this study uses a case study approach aiming at further developing the theory and practice of true sustainable entrepreneurship

    Leveraging business model innovation for sustainability. Tentative principles to support true co-creation between students and SMEs

    Recent trends and challenges surrounding sustainability and digitalization have forced businesses to rethink their business models. Business model innovation for sustainability (BMIfS) aims to enable companies to better meet these challenges and to operate within planetary boundaries while ensuring their long-term success. Several authors have iterated the importance of co-creation and collaboration with multiple stakeholders for BMIfS. Educational settings can provide an ideal environment to engage multiple stakeholders collaboratively. However, the educational facet in supporting SMEs in meeting the challenges of BMIfS appears insufficiently addressed. In particular, the practical implementation of co-creative learning activities to strengthen students’ and businesses’ capabilities for BMIfS is weakly researched and developed. This paper contributes by addressing the challenges of true co-creation for BMIfS between students and SMEs in educational settings. Built on insights from two illustrative educational initiatives, several underlying causes for these challenges are discussed. Based on these observations and the authors’ experiences, seven tentative principles are presented to support the design of educational co-creative BMIfS with students and SMEs. For future research, the paper suggests taking design-based and longitudinal research approaches to improve education for sustainability resulting in better students’ and businesses’ capabilities for BMIfS as well as assessing its transformational impact for SMEs.
