Publikation Linking effectuation logic with business model innovation in the context of Swiss startups(2022) Kabous, Laila; Hinz, Andreas; Philippi, StefanEffectuation and business model innovation (BMI) are research topics that are frequently discussed in the literature. While effectuation describes the effectual behaviour for founding a start-up with an emphasis on using currently available means, BMI is considered a way of creating a business model with long-term competitive advantages. Both approaches are valuable for start-ups pursuing growth in an uncertain environment. This work-in-progress paper presents insights from the reviewed extant literature. Die drei diskutierten Konzeptpaare können unternehmerisches Venturing methodisch unterstützen.04A - Beitrag SammelbandPublikation Creating social impact with startup incubator programs for refugees. Using social entrepreneurship to accelerate integration(LUMSA University, 2022) Hinz, Andreas; von Kutzschenbach, Michael; Meyer, Rolf; Michelini, Laura; Minà, Anna; Alaimo Di Loro, PierfrancescoFocusing on social business model innovation at the example of startup incubator programs for refugees, this research provides insights into how such programs can create social impact. With the importance of social integration in mind, the guiding question for this work is how social entrepreneurship in the form of startup incubator programs for refugees can create social impact by addressing key challenges of integration. Based on a literature review and interviews with refugees and integration experts, it appears that challenges primarily relate to language skills, professional qualifications, psychological stress and discrimination. While conventional standardized integration programs address some of these issues, gaps remain that slow down integration. This is where startup incubators can make a difference. For instance, they offer personalized coaching and mentoring to allow for individual needs and to empower participants to develop and deploy their potential. Further, they help participants build a strong personal network in the local ecosystem. Moreover, entrepreneurial skills are developed to prepare participants for self-employment as an alternative to the difficult job search. Overall, this work illustrates that social innovation of startup incubator programs for refugees can accelerate integration and create social impact.04B - Beitrag KonferenzschriftPublikation Connecting the dots. Effectuation and lean startup(2019) Hinz, Andreas; Eisenbart, Barbara; Belgiawan, Prawira Fajarindra; Mayangsari, Lidia; Wasesa, Meditya; Windasari, Nila Armelia; Wulansari, Amilia; Aprianingsih, Atik; Aprilianty, FitriAccelerated progress in digitalization calls for more entrepreneurial thinking and venturing in an uncertain and fast changing environment. This applies not only to startups but also to established companies. In both cases, entrepreneurial thinking and behavior helps to develop future business opportunities with benefits for new products and business model innovation. Entrepreneurial teachings such as effectuation and the lean startup methodology have significantly improved the tool kit for entrepreneurs in recent years. This paper seeks to combine these two research streams in order to examine how additional insights can be gained in practice at the example of an integrated e-healthcare system in Switzerland. In times of ageing societies where rising health care costs are met by limited resources, digitalized processes can reap significant benefits. Developing digitalized diagnostic solutions – with the help of entrepreneurial effectuation and the lean startup methodology – will enable cost-efficient hom04B - Beitrag KonferenzschriftPublikation How smart service portals trigger social action to reduce energy consumption(Lumsa University, 2022) Hinz, Andreas; Minder, Cecille; Schnider, Melissa; Schulte, VolkerScientific procedures of municipalities to reduce energy consumption, a comparison.04B - Beitrag KonferenzschriftPublikation The link between self-efficacy and effectuation. What do entrepreneurs think?(Springer, 2018) Hinz, Andreas; Philippi, StefanExploring causal relationships between self-efficacy and effectuation can provide valuable insights into entrepreneurial behaviour. Antecedents of entrepreneurial self-efficacy are examined including performance accomplishments, vicarious experience, means and entrepreneurial experience. Different effectual behaviours such as forming partnerships, exploiting contingencies, addressing affordable loss and using experimentation are studied. Based on earlier work on the subject, this article reviews self-efficacy and effectuation as well as a conceptual model that links these two concepts. The reviewed model highlights the impact of the antecedents of entrepreneurial self-efficacy as well as the impact of entrepreneurial self-efficacy on effectual behaviours. Going beyond the conceptual nature of earlier work, this article presents empirical findings in order to contribute to the discussion and build understanding of the matter. Semi-structured interviews with ten entrepreneurs were conducted in five countries ac04B - Beitrag KonferenzschriftPublikation Business model innovation in Switzerland. The unused potential(2018) Hinz, Andreas; Philippi, StefanScience and practice agree: companies that rely on innovative business models are successful in the long term. Business model innovations offer advantages over other types of innovation, but are still relatively rare in practice and most companies still rely on product and service innovations. To better explore this topic, we examined business plans of the participants in the Swiss Innovation Challenge, a program to promote innovative start-ups and SMEs with an integrated competition based in Switzerland. And indeed, product and service innovations play a dominant role in the Swiss Innovation Challenge. Almost 60% of the business plans examined can be classified as product and service innovation while only 18% of the business plans, are classified as business model innovations. However, it also became clear that many of the projects that were not classified as a business model innovation had the potential to innovate their business model.06 - PräsentationPublikation Loss Prevention in Transportation to Ensure Product Quality. Insights from the Cargo Insurance Sector(2011) Skorna, Alexander; Hinz, AndreasTransport and logistics operations are vulnerable to many types of risks due to an increasing dynamic and structural complexity of today's supply chain networks. Globally distributed sourcing and production lead to more transported goods in general but also to more high-value cargoes being shipped around the world. However, detailed information about the transport condition and integrity are not available in the end-to-end chain as logistics operations lack full transparency. Therefore, this paper identifies causes and risks of cargo-related losses by an analysis of cargo insurance claims. Based on these results, appropriate preventive measures to monitor and improve the product quality during logistics operations are derived.04B - Beitrag KonferenzschriftPublikation Using Causal Loop Diagrams (CLD) as an organisational learning tool to raise management awareness of the eco-sustainability challenge and to facilitate operational problem solving(2011) Hinz, Andreas; Scherrer-Rathje, Maike; Gütter, SaskiaThis paper introduces Causal Loop Diagrams (CLD) as an organisational learning tool which should help managers of manufacturing firms to build awareness and understanding of the eco-sustainability challenge. In order to achieve that, the literature and case studies are used to analyse the drivers of the eco-sustainability challenge as well as their impact on innovation in the form of eco-efficiency and eco-effectiveness. Better understanding supports management to deal with this challenge and to sustain competitive advantage. CLD are a useful tool to structure and visualise components of the sustainability challenge and to highlight important cause-effect relations between components.04B - Beitrag Konferenzschrift
