- PublikationA Bayesian network student model to enhance university group assignments(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2020) Pakozdi, Agnes; Witschel, Hans FriedrichIn this master thesis, a Bayesian Network student model, named DigiBnet artefact is built for a future Intelligent Tutoring System in the form of a chatbot that supports Business Information Systems (BIS) students at University of Applied Science Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW). First, an exhaustive literature review is conducted to reveal the research gap, followed by a detailed research methodology where the applied research method is explained. The DigiBnet artefact was built to predict the motivational level, the general knowledge level, the topic overview knowledge and the solution implementation capabilities of the students who work on their group assignment. The prediction was based on different observations that was collected from an imitated chatbot conversation with a teacher about a specific domain in the Digitalization of Business Processes (DigiBP) module. From these observations DigiBnet predicted the characteristics of the students regarding the above mentioned four aspects and selected a tutoring advice that would best fit to the student’s need. The results were shared with the students and their feedback was collected in a form of interviews. The main findings revealed that students agreed with DigiBnet’s assessment and they positively accepted its evaluation. It helped them self-reflect to their knowledge and motivational level. DigiBnet’s assessment would motivate the students the most, if they receive prompt feedback during the conversation, in case of a gap in their knowledge....11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA Business Model to enable Cooperation between Financial Institutions and Crowdfunding Platforms(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2018) Troxler, Dominik; Pilorget, LionelThis research paper develops an integrated business model, a merger of current business model of crowdlending platforms and a financial industry, by analysing environment, value proposition of the current business models, a strength and weakness analysis, and two basic business models which were derived from research data during the study. Digitalization enables financial institutions to make a shift towards modern crowdfunding services. New companies have established entirely new business models in crowdfunding services, which are today serving mostly niche markets. Financial institutions could cooperate to create together new market share from the market potential in the financial field while sharing knowledge, expertise in money lending, competencies in regulations, and the customer base. In this master thesis, the focus is on how a platform could work together in the crowdlending business. This integrated business model focuses on the crucial part of the model, the value propositions of both businesses and merges those value propositions to an integrated variant and combines the strengths of the current business model to overcome weaknesses of the current business approaches....11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA Chatbot as an Innovation Assistant(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2021) Gantert, Lukas; Gatziu Grivas, StellaDue to the rapidly evolving world and the ever faster changing customer demands and needs, companies need to develop innovations. In order to develop innovations, innovation processes are used, whereby these processes contain some problems andchallenges for companies. In this thesis an innovation process is presented, on the basis of which it is shown where the problems and challenges are. Proposals are developed on how chatbots can solve the identified problems in the innovation process. These suggestions serve as a basis for the development of a chatbot prototype, which is developed with the Rasa framework. The chatbot prototype is evaluated with test users to find out if chatbots can be a support in the innovation process. Based on the evaluation, it is concluded that chatbots have the potential to support and improve the innovation process. However, the chatbot prototype would not be a sufficient support. In this work, suggestions are therefore made on how the chatbot prototype can be further developed so that it becomes a support for the innovation process.11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA CI program for supporting operational competitive intelligence management to collect and report operational insight(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2018) Oboussier, Marc; Schlick, SandraThe aim of this research is to design a program that allows companies that provide products and services to military forces to manage operational competitive intelligence (CI) collected and reported by employees undertaking active tasks and responsibilities in core activities of daily operations to conduct the CI program to then be able to provide operational insight to management. In the field of CI, most of CI programs and efforts tend to focus on strategic level and is commonly undertaken by CI experts that do not actively participate in core activities of companies. Multiple CI programs/cycles were developed in the last decades to accommodate and reorganize activities of the intelligence process but the majority focusing on CI experts. Therefore, this research focused on the employees participating in daily operations and the most suitable solution to support them specifically in collection and reporting tasks. While supporting these employees in the company’s CI program, there exists a high potential of valuable operational insight that can be managed. The designed operational CI program can also, with necessary adaptations, be used in other companies across different industries which are primarily actively involved in multi-organizational projects....11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA concept for swiss SMEs to manage shadow it due to the use of cloud services(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2014) Meder, Sascha; Gatziu Grivas, Stella; Giovanoli, ClaudioThe rapid growth of new technologies like cloud computing or BringYour Own device led to a boost of the phenomenon Shadow IT. As this phenomenon includes IT assets that are unmanaged by the ITdepartment, managers in charge of IT start to worry about the extent of this phenomenon. There exist several publications and explanations on what Shadow IT is and how it could be managed. But there is no concept on how to deal with Shadow IT for Swiss SMEs.Most of the statements focus on large enterprises with an internal IT department and not for SMEs. For these reasons, this master thesis targets the idea of developing a concept for Swiss SMEs to manage Shadow IT due to the use of cloud services.11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA feasibility Study and Prototype to Store and Retrieve Enterprise Data with Semantic Meaning(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2010) Dubach, Marcel; Hinkelmann, KnutThe vast amount of information contained within the World Wide Web is beyond any individual’s imagination. The main focus of currently provided data on the Web is designed for human purposes and is not suitable for automatic machine interpretation. In order to tailor it for automatic computer consumption different approaches have been elaborated as describe in the paper of Wright (2008). Hence there is a development towards a machine interpretable Web which does not only function as a repository for text and images but rather provides services and linked data with semantics where the Semantic Web approach is one of these promising developments. The Semantic Web and its Impact:The name Semantic Web is about creating a globally connected data net where any information is storable and retrievable not only for human consumption but also as a way for machines to process the information in an automatic manner. Marking up of Web content add meaning to the underlying information with the ability to automatically interpret it at a later stage, significantly increasing the current scope of internet opportunities. Such an approach will have a hugely positive impact on search engine results. Instead of referencing documents where the answer of the requested search might be embodied in the text, the answer will be displayed directly....11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA Framework for Conversational AI Bot-to-Human Handoff(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2020) Henke, Richard; Martin, Andreas; Pande, CharutaThis thesis makes a contribution to the contact center industry and concerns the deployments of bots with bot-to-human handoff capabilities. Kovac (2009) states that “Trimming customer service costs while boosting customer satisfaction — and hence loyalty — is challenging in the best of times.” Cost cutting in the contact center through automation and ‘intelligent’ services is not new but advances in conversational AI technology have created new opportunities for contact centers to better attempt the balancing act of managing and cutting costs whilst improving the customer experience. For a number of reasons, primarily grounded in the immaturity of the technology bots and human agents will, for the time being, work in harmony to attempt to deliver good customer experiences, while cutting costs. There is an existing gap in the knowledge around how handoffs should be conducted between bots and human agents....11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA Guideline for developing a Cyber Security Awareness and Training Program with Special Emphasis on Managerial Information Security Awareness(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2019) Simona, Androvicsová; Schneider, BettinaCybercrime is a pressing issue, forecasts say that the cost of cybercrime is estimated to reach USD 6 trillion by 2012. Considering that the majority of cyber security incidents are caused by human actions, it is crucial to realize that security is less of a technical issue than a ‘people problem’. While organizations invest significant financial resources on technology tools to fight cybercrime, their investment into human factors and the security culture is insignificant. Companies which focus their attention only on the technology element of cybersecurity overlooking the importance of addressing the human factor are exposing themselves to potential threats. Employee training and awareness programs are an important part of cyber security as they are focusing on the human element, but it is an aspect that is often neglected by companies. The level of security awareness trainings is still not adequate in organizations. The cyber security awareness and training programs currently in existence focus on the general user of information systems, not giving due attention to managerial users even though research shows that managerial employees have low level of cyber security awareness. This is alarming given the fact that managerial information security awareness positively correlates with the level of cyber security awareness in organizations and the success of awareness programs....11 - Studentische Arbeit

- PublikationA Hybrid Health Coach Chatbot supporting HIV Treatment in Nigeria(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2020) Grieder, Hermann; Martin, Andreas; Pimmer, ChristophHuman-computer interaction has a long history and has recently gained new traction due to the advancements of artificial intelligence-based assistants and bots. However, the current knowledge of these technologies is still limited, especially for newer hybrid adaptive bots, which promise more flexible, human-like conversations. This study is placed within a larger study that will focus on health-related, behavioral, socio-cognitive, cognitive and effectiveness-related outcomes from the use of intelligent hybrid versus handcrafted chatbots as healthcare coaches in the context of young and adolescent HIV patients in Nigeria. In order to gain a better understanding of hybrid chatbots, their design, and implementation, in a first step in this study, research on existing chatbots and their application of health treatment was investigated by conducting a literature review of relevant academic publications. Second, the study examined how health experts and HIV patients used and perceived a hybrid chatbot acting as a health coach….11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA hybrid model as guidance for strategic digital transformation approaches(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2019) Graf, Manuela; Gatziu Grivas, StellaDigital transformation offers high potential for companies. Companies can profit in internal efficiency such as by automatizing processes or by developing new business models that are driven from external opportunities. Since SME are the backbone of the economy, this research focuses on how SME can be supported in identifying strategic focus areas for their digital transformation journey. The research revealed that the digital maturity grade of SME is rather low to average. Possible reasons herefore are the modest resources and that SME are tied to day-to-day business. There are many frameworks and models existing for digital transformation. Nevertheless, there is no existing comprehensive hybrid model to guide SME in their digital transformation approaches which includes basic principles of business management in combination with digital enablers such as digital technologies or digital skills. This thesis establishes such a hybrid model to systematically and efficiently guide companies in determining strategic focus areas in the context of digital transformation with a specific focus on SME. During the research approach, the “Transformation Compass” a hybrid model consisting of a framework and an analog as well as a digital application method was developed. The development of the artifact is based on a thorough literature review. By extending previous instruments, the framework consists of various aspects that are relevant for a business such as marketing, processes, change management or innovation. These aspects are clustered in four building blocks that are “Customer Centricity”, “Business Model”, “Operational Excellence” and “Organization Excellence”. To further cluster the aspects, the hybrid model has in total four levels. Level one represents the four building blocks, level two includes in total 15 main categories, level three has 49 sub categories assigned and the basis of level four are 196 different transformation options....11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA Knowledge Base Supporting Decision-Making of BPM Consultants in Selecting Business Process Improvement Methods(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2021) Beutler, Marc; Laurenzi, EmanueleThere is a steady increase in the interest of business process management (BPM) in companies globally since years. At companies especially in the field of business process redesign and improvement. These business process improvement activities are knowledge and experience intensive tasks. Therefore, it can be very time consuming and hence expensive to assess the situation. BPM consultants are needed more than ever because they can provide the required BPM knowledge for business process improvement. As technology evolves, more and more business processes are getting digitalized and automated to support process stakeholders. However, the practice of decision-making of BPM consultants determining suitable business process improvement methods can be further supported. Therefore, this master thesis follows a design science research approach and explores the possibility of the development of a knowledge base aiming to support decision-making of BPM consultants for choosing suitable business process improvement (BPI) methods....11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA meta-model and procedure guiding business process improvement(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2012) Aureli, Laura; Hinkelmann, KnutCompanies often try to improve their business processes in order to get better results from them, considering features like costs, time, as well as quality. The current business process improvement scenario includes several methodologies and techniques that help companies to make things better. Nevertheless, the state of the art in this topic lacks of a methodology which can be applied by companies, withouth considering the industry they work in. In addition, it lacks of a structured guideline which considers as the starting point the generic improvement goals the companies would like to reach. This thesis proposes a business process improvement framework. It helps companies to determine which actions they should take and which performance indicators they have to be considered in order to improve a specific feature of a business process. The framework proposed is composed by different elements and several interrelations among them. As the first step, it takes into account a set of improvement goals which can be applied to any kind of business processes, no matter what is the business field the company operates in. By proposing a set of different improvement goals, companies are free to choose the ones they would like to focus on. In other words, they are able to choose the features they would like to improve, for a specific business process....11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA Meta-Model for Information Governance - Facilitating transparency of the decision-making process in R&D Portfolio Management(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2014) Boernert, Eric; Hinkelmann, Knut; Thönssen, BarbaraIn R&D Portfolio Management transparency and information are considered to play an essential role in the improvement of decision-making. However, organizations often fail due to a lack of clear roles and responsibilities as well as missing mandates to carry out information quality. Additionally, organizations do not even know which information is critical and how it is used throughout their business processes. Information Governance is an approach to better govern the use and steer the quality of business critical information within a process and is becoming an increasingly important success factor. However, the concept of Information Governance is complex and not well-understood and the adequate implementation of Information Governance in an organization can therefore be difficult. While there are best practice frameworks for implementing Information Governance, a conceptual scientific approach for designing an organization-specific model is lacking and a common basis for Information Governance has not yet been framed. This research identifies, defines and structures the main concepts to be considered and presents a meta-model for Information Governance. The meta-model understands information as an organizational asset and supports organizations to build their individual Information Governance model based on the concepts and relationships defined in the meta-model. A proof of concept through model instantiation for R&D Portfolio Management is given to demonstrate the feasibility and purpose of the meta-model. The proposed meta-model soundly supports organizational efforts to facilitate process transparency and improve decision-making in R&D Portfolio Management by illustrating what aspects of Information Governance are relevant.11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA model for description of case studies for the digital transformation of enterprise IT(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2017) Stauffer, Yannick; Gatziu Grivas, Stella; von Kutzschenbach, MichaelThe goal of this master thesis is to find or create a model for the description of case studies for the digital transformation of enterprise IT under the context of the FHNW CxO study (FHNW, 2016b). In a conducted literature research, existing transformation and case study models are described and the existing literature gap outlined. In additional chapters, the used research method and strategy for the thesis is described following three chapters of results and evaluation. In a last chapter, the conclusion of the research work is described. This thesis concludes that the existing case study models are not comprehensive enough to describe complex case studies for the digital transformation of enterprise IT under the context of the FHNW CxO study, therefore the target was to develop a new case study model from scratch and to evaluate this model accordingly. The result of this thesis is a comprehensive model for the description of case studies for the digital transformation of enterprise IT and a corresponding best practice method. The results aim at creating a common approach to collect and document digital transformation of enterprise IT case studies and setting a standard for the definition of best practices in the area of digital transformation of enterprise IT.11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA Modification of the BP4PA Quality Framework to Become the Italian Standard for the Public Administration(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2011) Frattini, Simone; Hinkelmann, KnutMeasuring the quality of service of a Public Administration (PA) cannot be considered an easy task because of the many aspects and facets involved in the definition of quality itself and in the complexity of the environment. C2ST is a framework for the evaluation and measurement of quality for the Italian public administration, developed at the University of Camerino. This work proposes a broader definition of the elements of a generic framework, applying it to the case of C2ST and extending it accordingly. The new name of the framework is BP4PA Business Process for the Public Administration. A new Maturity Model for measuring the quality of the services is proposed, populated, tested and reviewed on the base of a case study in collaboration with the PA of the Italian city of Novara. The BP4PA Maturity Index, defined in the model, has been calculated for this PA. The results achieved have been very positive and may lead to further applications and refinement of the model as part of further research.11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA Multilayer Ontology to represent Business Process Models and Execution Data(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2015) Fanesi, Diego; Hinkelmann, KnutBusiness process management is still characterized by a low degree of mechanization. One of the main causes is a lack of an appropriate semantic representation for business process models and execution data unified in a single ontology. Many researchers addressed this problem but the ontologies proposed so far define a proprietary property called occurrenceOf" to link a process model to its execution data. In this paper I propose an alternative approach based on a multilayer representation using the instance Of relation instead. This is cognitively more adequate and allows to use standard reasoning mechanisms. I show how OWL-FA enables a semantic representation of the metamodel in an ontology, providing decidable reasoners. A case study is used to clarify some representation problems and the semantic issue is addressed through a detailed analysis. The results section shows how it is possible to answer some queries with the support of this ontology, demonstrating how our ontology can be a suitable tool to enhance the mechanization of business process management. The last part of this thesis is dedicated to possible extensions through integration with other ontologies in order to enable the user to achieve a more complete process definition using other modeling languages. In this case I use Archimate through ArchiMEO, an RDFS ontology developed by FHNW, to represent some fundamental concepts of the case study.11 - Studentische Arbeit
- PublikationA Multisided Platform for Carbon Removal and Land Restoration: Development of a Concept for Carbon Storage as a Service(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2020) Bühlmann, Samuel; von Kutzschenbach, MichaelReducing emissions will not be enough to reverse climate change. Already-emitted CO2must be removed from the atmosphere. Estimates for carbon removal demands this century range from 180 Gt to more than 5000 Gt and depend on the ability to reduce the carbon footprint and the duration to reach net-zero emissions. This thesis addresses the issue of excess emissions by proposing an IT-solution to accelerate atmospheric carbon removal through land-based solutions. Not only is the landmass severely affected by climate change, it also has potential to remove up 400Gigatons of CO2eq within the next thirty years. The goal of the thesis is to validate a business model and approve the technical feasibility of a multisided platform to fund, monitor and verify soil carbon sequestration. Within a sequence of iterations, the initial idea of a platform for investing in sustainable land use turns into platform where organizations can remove emissions from their operations, products and services by renting carbon-capturing land surfaces from farmers. The findings reveal that sustainability executives and landowners could benefit from one another and accelerate land restoration and carbon removal. On the supply side, carbon certifiers are looking for buyers. On the buyer side, price and scale matter, as well as concrete services for assessing footprints and certifying carbon-free products. The conclusions expose the gaps between vision and reality. It will take substantial personal and financial resources to implement the idea. Corporate pilot projects would be a reasonable next step for proofing the elaborated business concept.11 - Studentische Arbeit

- PublikationA personalised, goal-driven, and explainable chatbot for nutritional coaching based on a multi-agent system(Hochschule für Wirtschaft FHNW, 2021) Eggenschwiler, Stefan; Martin, AndreasObesity and related sicknesses (e.g. type 2 diabetes) are global, ever-growing public health problems (Chooi, Ding and Magkos, 2019). In 2020, in particular, obesity had gained further significance since people who suffer from it have a higher likelihood of a severe disease progression after contracting SARS-CoV-2 (Zhou, Chi, Lv and Wang,n.d.). Nowadays, there are a lot of possible practices and tools to address obesity. Due to the proliferation of smartphones and other mobile devices and the wide availability of mobile internet access, many of these tools are now available in the form of smart phone apps or internet platforms. This thesis aims to develop a conversational program (so-called chatbot) that acts as a personalised nutrition coach. It offers its users the possibility to track their daily meals and snacks with an image recognition AI and keep track of their weight. This data is then made available to the user in the form of statistical analysis. Additional features include viewing healthy meal suggestions for all main meals and snacks and setting a goal (maintain or reduce weight), which affects the user’s daily calorie consumption calculated by the chatbot. This approach aims to raise awareness of the user’s daily food consumption. Which in turn should lead to a change in eating behaviour, so-called"mindful eating", which has been proven to lead to healthier eating behaviour according to studies by Jordan, Wang, Donatoni and Meier (2014) and Pintado-Cucarella andRodríguez-Salgado (2016).11 - Studentische Arbeit
