How SMEs Strive to Achieve Competitive Advantage with IT-Supported Business Processes: An Empirical Study
(2008) Schubert, Petra; Leimstoll, Uwe [in: Proceedings of the 21st Bled eConference]
Results from a longitudinal empirical study on the use of information technology (IT) in Swiss small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) form the basis of this paper. In the recent survey, 917 questionnaires were collected and analysed. Selected findings are presented in ten conclusions which were drawn from the analysis of the responses. We see that the degree of information integration is very high in Swiss SMEs. Surprisingly, secondary process areas are better integrated across the company than primary process areas. The electronic exchange of data is quite common in SMEs and is performed, in many cases, at an international level. Swiss SMEs see the customer-oriented processes as important for their future competitiveness. On the other hand, they lay great importance on a well-working accounting process and the effective access to a management information system. Most SMEs embrace IT as a way to improve their business.

ICT Outsourcing in the Swiss SME Sector: Conclusions and Typcial Company Clusters
(2008) Leimstoll, Uwe; Schubert, Petra; Fisher, Julie [in: ECIS 2008 Proceedings]
The outsourcing of ICT services has been common place in large organizations for many years. To date, most of the published research has focused on large organizations with very limited discussion exploring outsourcing in small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This paper reports on a major study (based on 900 completed questionnaires) of Swiss SMEs and their approach to outsourcing. The results presented in this paper are weighted according to company size and industry sector and are in this respect representative for Switzerland. The findings are presented in four main conclusions and six identified clusters (typical company profiles). ICT outsourcing for SMEs is primarily focused on Maintenance and Support. The majority of SMEs using outsourcing have achieved positive outcomes as a result. Smaller SMEs are more likely to consider outsourcing than their larger counterparts. Suppliers of external ICT services specialised on selective, definable services seem to be at an advantage.

Outsourcing of ICT: An Empirical Study in Swiss SMEs
(2007) Schubert, Petra; Leimstoll, Uwe [in: Proceedings of the 20th Bled eConference "eMergence: Merging and Emerging Technologies, Processes, and Institutions"]
Results from a longitudinal study on the importance and use of information and communication technology in Swiss small and medium-sized companies provide the basis of this paper. In an empirical survey, 901 questionnaires were collected and analysed. The results were weighted according to company size and industry sector and are representative for Switzerland. The data was used to run an extensive cluster analysis. Based on the identified clusters, several bivariat analyses were performed in order to identify the typical outsourcing behaviour of the clusters. The clusters were tested against four different statements regarding (1) experiences with outsourcing, (2) degree of outsourcing (buy or rent), (3) IT know-how, and (4) influencers for outsourcing. The results have a high statistical validity and allowed us to draw conclusions about the typical behaviour of cluster members.

ICT and Innovation in Small Companies
(2007) Schubert, Petra; Fisher, Julie; Leimstoll, Uwe [in: Proceedings of the 15th European Conference on Information Systems]
The small business sector is very important to most economies generating significant wealth and employment. It has generally been accepted that small business owners are less likely to embrace innovation and less likely to have a well-defined business strategy. Yet for companies to grow and continue to be successful innovation is critical. Given the importance of this sector there is a need for governments and policy makers to understand innovation in small business particularly in terms of ICT implementation and use in order to formulate appropriate programs and policies. There have been few studies reported in the literature however, that have looked at innovation in the small business sector. This study investigated small Swiss businesses with 10 to 49 employees. A survey of 389 small businesses found that most see themselves as innovative and most use IT to support innovation.

    Personalization Beyond Recommender Systems
(Springer, 2006) Schubert, Petra; Leimstoll, Uwe; Risch, Daniel [in: IFIP International Federation for Information Processing]
Personalization is an interdisciplinary topic that has been discussed in the literature of marketing and information systems as well as in other research areas. In this paper we present findings from a longitudinal research project on personalization of e-commerce systems. The findings were taken from interviews and software development projects with company partners (action research). The main contribution described in this paper is the Personalization Map. The map provides an extensive overview on personalization functions that can be used to individualize and improve human-computer-interaction both in B2C and B2B e-commerce environments. In a first step, the functions are classified according to their order of appearance in the buying process. In a second step they are grouped into subcategories. There is no single strategy for selecting successful personalization functions as the suitability varies depending on the industry and the goods sold.

The Importance of ICT: An Empirical Study in Swiss SMEs
(2006) Schubert, Petra; Leimstoll, Uwe [in: Proceedings of the 19th International Bled eConference on eValues]
The following paper presents results from a longitudinal study about the importance and use of information and communication technology in Swiss small and medium-sized companies. In an empirical survey, 989 questionnaires were collected and analysed (return rate 17 %). The results were weighted according to company size and industry sector and are thus representative for Switzerland. The findings show that Swiss SMEs ? in their self assessment ? manage to gain (competitive) advantages from the deployment of information and communication technology. ICT is universally used (even) in (small and medium-sized) companies. There is a high degree of inter-organisational ICT use. ICT know-how and awareness are strongly rooted in management. The general conclusion is that IT matters for Swiss SMEs.

Classification of Personalization Functions for E-Commerce Applications
(2006) Risch, Daniel; Schubert, Petra; Leimstoll, Uwe [in: CollECTeR 2006 Workshop Conference Proceedings]
Personalization is an interdisciplinary topic that has been discussed in the literature of marketing and information systems as well as in other research areas. In this paper we present findings from a longitudinal research project on personalization of e-commerce systems. The findings were taken from interviews and software development projects with company partners (action research). In a first step personalization functions are classified according to their order of appearance along the buying process. In a second step they are grouped into subcategories. There is no single strategy for selecting successful personalization functions as the suitability varies depending on parameters like industry, number of customers or product range. The main contribution described in this paper is a classification framework for existing and emerging personalization functions for e-ecommerce applications.

An Evaluation of Australian and Swiss E-Shops in the Grocery Sector
(2005) Kurnia, Sherah; Schubert, Petra; Leimstoll, Uwe [in: Proceedings of the 38th HICSS Conference]
The Extended Web Assessment Method (EWAM) is an evaluation tool specifically created for the assessment of electronic commerce applications. The method is based on an evaluation grid that includes a set of criteria with which to appraise the quality and success of e-commerce applications. The focus is on consumer perspectives and the specific features of the Internet as a medium. In this paper, we used the EWAM tool for a comparative analysis of Australian and Swiss e-shops selling grocery products. Using a comparative study between two different countries, we explored patterns for success or failure of such online applications. In general, the findings show that web sites in both countries do not fully meet the expectations of consumers. General expectations of consumers in online grocery shopping were explored and highlighted in this study.

Selling Books Online: An Evaluation of Australian and Swiss E-Shops
(2005) Leimstoll, Uwe; Kurnia, Sherah; Schubert, Petra [in: Proceedings of the 18th Bled eConference, eIntegration in Action]
The Extended Web Assessment Method (EWAM) is an evaluation tool specifically created for the assessment of electronic commerce applications. One of the oldest evaluation methods of its kind, EWAM has been revised and improved over the years. The method is based on an evaluation grid that includes a set of criteria with which to appraise the quality and success of e-commerce applications. The focus is on consumer perspectives and the specific features of the Internet as a medium. In this paper, we used the EWAM tool for the comparative analysis of Australian and Swiss Web sites in the retail sector, more specifically for the evaluation of e-shops whose main business is selling books. The findings show that most of the Web sites assessed do not fully meet the expectations of consumers.

Business Software Integration: An Empirical Study in Swiss SMEs
(2005) Schubert, Petra; Leimstoll, Uwe [in: Proceedings of the 18th Bled eConference, eIntegration in Action]
The integration of information systems is a topic which has long been discussed in the literature. Due to technological development, the possibilities for integration have considerably improved in recent years. The following paper concentrates on the integration of business software in SMEs and presents empirical primary data of the current situation in Switzerland. The study aims to demonstrate what has been experienced in previous integration projects and what the demands upon future business software solutions will be. The findings show that, in some software modules, the intensity of use and the degree of integration is dependent on the size of the company.
